Abstract

This paper investigates the eunuch's institution in the court of the Abbasid caliph al-Muqtadir and seeks, first, to delineate the variety of functions that the eunuchs held in the early fourth/tenth century Abbasid court both in the harem and in ceremonial; second, it investigates the careers of the eunuchs Sāfī al-Huramī and Muflih al-Khādim al-Aswad, exploring their sources of authority and their various networks which allowed them to exercise a high degree of political influence.
