Abstract

Richard Bauckham's book, Jesus and the Eyewitnesses, while breaking new ground in many details, sets up an a priori approach to the Gospel traditions which has difficulty in coping with the textual phenomena which form the basis of an a posteriori approach. Discussion of selected examples suggests the vulnerability of the hypothesis and the necessity of a less trusting, more critical and firmly tradition-historical perspective.
