Abstract

This paper uses the literary phenomenon of reversal (peripeteia) to explore the purpose of 3 Maccabees. The peripeteia and its attendant reversals receive such emphasis that they produce a tableau resembling scenes of final judgement. They have, moreover, functions similar to those of final judgement scenarios, consoling the faithful and threatening the faithless. The presence of these features indicates that the purpose of 3 Maccabees is to promote orthopraxy within the expatriate community.
