Richard Fisher provides an analytic narrative of the development of transatlantic monograph publishing over the past generation, considering why, despite significant institutional pressures, much less has changed in this sphere than has been the case with, for example, scientific serials. He considers the major challenges of both demand and supply confronting the monograph format, the crucial impact of digital short-run-printing technologies, and the importance of e-tailers like Amazon. He assesses the role of the numerous intermediaries engaged in the distribution of monographs, in a global context where print sales and circulation still dominate, and suggests lines of enquiry and innovation that monograph publishers and their sponsors (private or public) might usefully pursue.
