This article functions as a preliminary to a detailed commentary on Statius, Silvae 1, discussing five passages all drawn from that book (1.1.18-21, 1.3.83-9, 1.3.99-104, 1.5.1-5 and 1.5.10-4). The five passages discussed all contain layers of literary allusion which, it is suggested, point the reader towards a fuller and richer interpretation of the text.
