Representation of lesbian relations in Ming-Qing vernacular literature is foremost a male discourse. A close look into this discourse will help gauge the contemporary social stance, especially the male stance, towards lesbianism. This paper examines textual strategies and the narrative norm of portraying lesbian love and sex in twelve Ming-Qing texts. The normative pattern extracted from these texts suggests a consensus in the male position that favors suppression of lesbianism via trivializing or heterosexualizing passions and romance between women. Male writing on lesbianism thus seems to function as containment of homosexuality for the benefit of the institutions of heterosexual sex and marriage.
