Abstract

Interpretation of Paul’s letter to Philemon faces the problem that the situation is obscure. Paul only alludes to what has happened. It is common to presuppose the use of a rhetorical device which makes it possible to deviate from the literal sense of the passage. It appears that a philologically cautious translation of Philemon 8, 18 and 19 might be a starting point for a new understanding of the text.
