Abstract

<title> SUMMARY </title>The Milan University research group in history of physics has started to catalogue the geomagnetical instruments preserved in Italian institutions, as part of the «Beni Culturali» project, fostered by the CNR committee n° 15. Places and institutions where instruments can be found have been suggested by our wider historical research on contributions of Italian scholars to studies on geomagnetism. Some methodological problems related to the cataloguing of scientific instruments are discussed.Till now about 100 «classical» instruments have been catalogued: they bear witness to the diffusion and the continuity of Italian studies on Earth magnetism during the last two centuries.
