Abstract

<title> SUMMARY </title>The paper examines the contexts of Galileo's Copernican letters, with particular reference to the preparation and publication of the ISTORIA e dimostrazioni intorno alle macchie solari e loro accidenti (1613).It emphasizes that Galileo's reference to the Holy Scriptures aimed at stating the incompatibility between the Bible and the peripatetic and thomistic doctrines. Galileo wanted to make the new physical truths free from the theological autority.
