Abstract

By analysing seventeenth-century North Netherlandish pupils' contracts, most of them published, of painters, goldsmiths and silversmiths, a picture emerges of the time a pupil spent with a master, whether a painter, a goldsmith or a silversmith. A pupil's contract set forth the mutual interests and obligations of master and pupil. Contracts were either drawn up by notaries or agreed on privately.
