Abstract

A manuscript list in Hugo Grotius's own hand, containing 28 titles of books has been preserved in the Municipal Library of Rotterdam. This short list appears to have been excerpted from the Catalogus universalis, No. 1 (Amsterdam 1640), a bibliography of books printed in the Netherlands, which was brought out periodically by the Amsterdam publisher and gazetteer Broer Jansz. Grotius probably used the Catalogus as a source to supplement his knowledge of recently published books, alongside the scholarly news he received in his correspondence or through personal contacts.
