Abstract

Among the principles of typographic design in this century one may distinguish two groups - decorative and functional - and among the latter a traditional and an anti-traditional wing. It was Tschichold who, by the example of his design work and by his theoretical writings, spread both branches of functionalism most effectively, with a more widespread influence than that exerted by their first theorists - Stanley Morison and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy respectively. How could he preach first revolution and then tradition with the same vehement and apodictic conviction and yet make splendid designs in both systems? The link between the two opposites is impeccable functionalistic workmanship mostly in different fields: first in advertising, then in book production.
