Beckett as a boy read Sir Conan Doyle's stories, and has been said to reflect this reading. Several years earlier, however, mocks syllogistic thinking but likewise toys with the inductive investigations of Sherlock Holmes. Although during the war people may have wanted to be assured that rational meaning still existed, Beckett shows quite the reverse; in advance of he hails the genre of detective fiction, but writes a sort of anti-detective novel.
