Contrasting with Bergson’s time of consciousness as the subjective perception of a time stream, Winnie embodies the repetitive time of anxiety. Every major somatic event (the one Winnie experiences, as well as the patient being told of a life-threatening condition) consigns the subject to a temporal anomie, that Lacan has worked out in theoretical terms. His stressing of three separate sequences : l’ instant du regard (the instant of a glance), le temps pour comprendre (the time to understand), le moment de conclure (the moment to conclude), may help us to understand how and why one can immobilize oneself, as Winnie does, in repetition.
