Dans cette transcription d’un enregistrement audio fait en 1947, Simone de Beauvoir définit le fond philosophique et la forme esthétique du théâtre existentialiste pour le public américain. Elle présente les deux dramaturges les plus importants de ce mouvement, Jean-Paul Sartre et Albert Camus, ainsi que les thèmes principaux et le contexte mythologique de leurs premières œuvres théâtrales : pour Sartre, Les Mouches et Huis clos ; pour Camus, Caligula. Beauvoir souligne au terme de ce survol le message optimiste de ces pièces, surtout pour le public d’après-guerre en France et aux États-Unis.
Abstract
In this transcription of an audio recording made in 1947, Simone de Beauvoir explains the philosophical basis and aesthetic form of existentialist theater to the American public. She presents the two most important playwrights in this movement, Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus, along with the principal themes and mythological influences of their first theatrical works : for Sartre, The Flies and No Exit ; for Camus, Caligula. At the end of her synopsis, Beauvoir emphasizes the optimistic messages of these plays, especially in the context of the postwar period in France and the United States.
