Abstract

In 1885, the weekly published by the Catholic Missions (Missions Catholiques) set about producing large maps based on the work carried out by missionaries. Those maps dealt with the advance of evangelization on all continents and were entitled : “Maps to Follow the Advance and Progress of Civilization”. A map was published and offered to subscribers every year until 1915. Together, these thirty or so maps make up an unequalled corpus of the representation of Catholic missions. Whether they were mere ornaments or actual propaganda tools, these maps that were meant to be put up and displayed deserve to be analyzed in both their form and their content. The objective of this study is to use specific examples to measure the advantages of the use of maps as a means of communication as well as the status of the maps put on display in the French society of the time.
