Historians and literary critics continue to debate the ability of African literature to portray the history of Africa. Some scholars claim African literature is incapable of reflecting objective facts of history; others maintain that only some genres of literature can portray the history of a particular society. Still others see literary works as inevitably reflecting a given time in the history of a particular society. The data assembled here indicate that all kinds of literary works – poetry, plays, novels and orature – have portrayed the history of specific African societies; literary works constitute one of the very important sources of historical data.
