Abstract

Profile Neurosis. On a Signature of Subjectivity in Digital Culture

In three steps, the article explores the link between the ubiquitous need and supply of profiles on the one hand and the idea of optimization on the other hand. In a first step, a historical connection is drawn between the pedagogical motive of human improvement and the idea of optimization. It will be shown, secondly, that within this idea of optimization the ›entrepreneurial self‹ has become a ›project‹ itself. This ›project-self‹ is determined, thirdly, to develop a profile throughout life, which also becomes a dispositive not least set by digital technologies.
