A Note on w∂yiqtol and Volitive Sequences

In: Vetus Testamentum

Joel Baden has recently argued that, in Biblical Hebrew, w∂ + yiqtol long form expresses a distinct function. This proposal is criticized in the present note, on both morphological and syntactic grounds. Ostensible cases of w∂yiqtol are to be regarded as instances of w∂ + jussive, in which the jussive form has been replaced by yiqtol due to natural evolution of the language or to modernizing by later scribes.
