Abstract

This note argues that the plot in Jer. 18:18b is to be understood as a conspiracy to silence the prophet Jeremiah by striking his tongue. This interpretation is supported by the context, and makes sense given that cutting out an individual's tongue was a familiar form of punishment in the ancient Near East.
