The ZfmE has set itself the goal of discussing the basic questions and current developments in medical ethics in an interdisciplinary manner and to bring in a particular way the contribution of Christian ethics and the basic anthropological insights of the occidental tradition into the increasingly complex medical-ethical discussion. In accordance with the subtitle of the journal, medical-ethical questions are to be dealt with from an all-embracing perspective of science, culture and religion. In view of the growing importance of fundamental ethical questions in modern medicine, well-founded scientific factual information and well-founded ethical judgment are equally required in order to be able to responsibly determine the opportunities and risks of medical action and medical research. In four issues published annually, current and enduring questions of the medical-ethical discussion are discussed in an interdisciplinary manner. The individual issues are each devoted to a main topic.
Volumes 1–38 (1955–1992) of Zeitschrift für Medizinische Ethik have been published as Arzt und Christ ( AUCH).

Die Zeitschrift für medizinische Ethik (ZfmE) ist die älteste deutschsprachige medizinethische Fachzeitschrift, die 1954 zunächst unter dem Titel „Arzt und Christ“ gegründet wurde, um ein wissenschaftliches Forum für die etische Reflexion jener vielfältigen moralischen Herausforderungen zu schaffen, die sich aus der rasanten Entwicklung der modernen Medizin und dem tiefgreifenden Strukturwandel ärztlichen Handelns ergeben. Seit dem Jahr 1992 erscheint die Zeitschrift unter ihrem gegenwärtigen Namen, wobei die im Untertitel genannten Stichworte ‚Wissenschaft‘, ‚Kultur‘ und ‚Religion‘ bereits andeuten, dass angemessene Problemlösungen auf dem weiten Feld der Erbringung gesundheitsbezogener Leistungen einer wissenschaftlichen Expertise bedürfen, die den Horizont monodisziplinärer Reflexion übersteigt. Dabei geht es der ZfmE neben der notwendigen Verschränkung natur-, human-, sozial- und normwissenschaftlicher Perspektiven zur Erschließung einzelner Problemfelder immer auch darum, grundlegende Einsichten der ebenso langen wie in sich pluralen christlichen Tradition in den zeitgenössischen Diskurs um gesundheitsbezogene Themen einzubringen. Seit 2001 wird die Zeitschrift im Auftrag der Görres-Gesellschaft herausgegeben, um diese breite Verankerung im Bereich der Wissenschaftskultur institutionell abzusichern. Die ZfmE richtet sich an ethische interessierte Entscheidungsträger sämtlicher Gesundheitsberufe und verfolgt das Ziel, nicht nur grundlegende ethische Orientierungen, sondern auch wichtige Hintergrundinformationen zu aktuellen Problemfeldern sowie konkrete Hilfestellungen für praktische Konfliktsituationen zu vermitteln.
ZfmE is the oldest German-language journal on medical ethics, founded in 1954 initially under the title "Arzt und Christ" (Physician and Christian) to provide a scientific forum for the ethical reflection of those manifold moral challenges arising from the rapid development of modern medicine and the profound structural change in medical practice. Since 1992, the journal has been published under its current name, whereby the keywords 'science', 'culture' and 'religion' mentioned in the subtitle already indicate that appropriate solutions to problems in the broad field of the provision of health-related services require scientific expertise that exceeds the horizon of single-disciplinary reflection. In addition to the necessary interconnection of perspectives from the natural sciences, humanities, social sciences and ethics, the ZfmE is also concerned with introducing fundamental insights from the Christian tradition, which is as long as it is pluralistic, into the contemporary discourse on health-related topics. Since 2001, the journal has been published on behalf of the Görres Society in order to institutionally secure this broad anchoring in the field of scientific culture. The ZfmE addresses ethically interested decision-makers of all health care professions and pursues the goal of providing not only basic ethical orientations, but also important background information on current problem areas as well as actual assistance for practical conflict situations.
