This Is How a Generation Grows’: Lynching as a Site Of Ethical Loss in Opatoshu’s ‘Lintsheray’

Abstract

This article argues that in Joseph Opatoshu’s 1915 story ‘Lintsheray’ the theme of lynching is used not only as a critique of white American ethics, but also as a critique of the decline of Jewish ethics as a product of assimilation. In this story, assimilation is not about loss of religious or ethnic identity, but loss of ethicality as Jews integrate into an unjust society and into American whiteness.
