The Yearbook of Ancient Greek Epic (YAGE) publishes articles on all aspects of the epic tradition from Homer to Nonnus. This inaugural volume comprises eight articles. Seven are on Homeric poetry, six of which adopt a variety of approaches, from the metrical to the narratological to the oralist, in addressing the theme of “the epic middle.” One is on the fragments of the poet Manetho Astrologus.
Jonathan L. Ready is Associate Professor of Classical Studies at Indiana University. He has authored two monographs on the Homeric simile: Character, Narrator, and Simile in the Iliad (Cambridge, 2011) and The Homeric Simile in Performance: Comparative Perspectives (Oxford, forthcoming).
Christos Tsagalis is Professor of Greek at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He has authored six monographs: Epic Grief (2004); The Oral Palimpsest (2008); Inscribing Sorrow (2008); Space in the Iliad (2012); Ομηρικές μελέτες (2016); Early Greek Epic Fragments (forthcoming).
Contributors are: Justin Arft, Bill Beck, Ronald J. J. Blankenborg, Jonathan Fenno, Zina Giannopoulou, Andrew M. McClellan, Pietro Pucci, and Konstantinos Spanoudakis.
"YAGE differs from most Classical journals in two respects, which provide the journal with a special and particularly coherent format: YAGE is unusual in its focus on a single genre of ancient literature, and also in its attempt to devote a cluster of articles in every issue to a specific topic (while still including contributions on other topics), thus combining the forms of traditional journal and special issue/thematic collective volume (...) the inaugural volume of the Yearbook of Ancient Greek Epic first and foremost bears testimony both to the incredible and impressive breadth and theoretical diversity of Homeric scholarship as well as to the fact that the Homeric poems are certainly the most prolific field of Ancient Greek epic studies" Fabian Horn, Bryn Mawr Classical Review 2017.05.47
