Im Mittelalter und in der Frühen Neuzeit war es als exegetisches Standardwerk und als Fundgrube dogmatischer und moraltheologischer Thesen von größtem Einfluß. Seine Bestimmung des Verhältnisses Altes – Neues Testament wurde vom II. Vatikanischen Konzil aufgenommen und ging in nachkonziliare römische Dokumente ein.

This late work of Augustine, which is presented here as the first German translation, is the most influential exegetical work on Genesis to the Book of Judges in the Latin Church until the beginning of modern times. It deals with details of philology, literal and figurative interpretation as well as dogmatic and moral theological problems.

Walter Groß studierte Philosophie und Theologie in Rom an der Gregoriana und dem Päpstlichen Bibelinstitut. Seit 1980 war er Ordinarius für Altes Testament in Tübingen.
