„Das Leib-Seele-Problem“, das der vorliegende Band behandelt, ist das ontologische Grundproblem in der Philosophie des Geistes. Es wird heute in erster Linie als die Frage nach der Möglichkeit von kausalen Beziehungen zwischen geistigen und körperlichen Ereignissen formuliert. Eng verknüpft mit diesem Problem ist jedoch die allgemeinere Frage nach dem ontologischen Status mentaler Zustände: In welchem Sinne sind - zum Beispiel - Gedanken oder Gefühle reale Zustände, echte Bausteine der Wirklichkeit, die eine eigene kausale Rolle spielen? Sind sie wirklich in der Welt? Immerhin handelt es sich um subjektive Zustände, die nach unserem traditionellen Verständnis keine öffentlich beobachtbaren Eigenschaften besitzen. In welcher Beziehung stehen sie eigentlich zu den objektiven Aspekten der Realität? Gibt es sie überhaupt und in genau welchem Sinne kann man von ihnen sagen, dass sie existieren?

"The mind-body problem", which the present volume deals with, is the basic ontological problem in the philosophy of mind. It is formulated today primarily as the question of the possibility of causal relations between mental and physical events. Closely related to this problem, however, is the more general question of the ontological status of mental states: In what sense are - for example - thoughts or feelings real states, real building blocks of reality that play their own causal role? Are they really in the world? After all, they are subjective states that, according to our traditional understanding, have no publicly observable properties.
