Peter Riedlberger

Peter Riedlberger’s award-winning thesis offers an exhaustive commentary on the 8th and last book of the Iohannis. This poem intrigues its readers on more than one account: Using the well-established form of Latin epic, it offers a fascinating window into the world of reconquered Roman Africa ca. 550 A.D. On one level, the commentary tries to elucidate the numerous allusions to contemporary events, persons and realia; on another level, it firmly sets the poem in the Latin epic tradition, distinguishing clearly between poetical conventions and descriptions of real-life facts. This book further comprises a critical edition of the 8th book, the first ever German translation, and a comprehensive introduction, which establishes the true name of the author (Gorippus, not Corippus) and challenges the current notion of the function and role of late antique panegyrics. Strong points include the book’s high readability, its many illustrations (which include useful maps and several reproductions).

From its beginning in the 8th century Islamic dialectical theology ( kalām) was increasingly influenced by Peripatetical Logic. The ‘orthodox’ solutions of the main problems of Muslim theology are the result of centuries of dispute between scholars arguing on the basis of grammatical and logical arguments. This volume offers a new approach in the problems of Islamic hermeneutics and the understanding of Quraʾnic exegesis, Muslim theology and the appropriation of Peripatetical logic in the Arabic world.
Subjects included are the problems of name ( ism) and qualification ( waṣf), condition ( šarṭ) and consequence ( ğazāʾ), the whole ( kull) and the part ( baʿḍ), the general ( ʿāmm) and the special ( ḫāṣṣ), expression ( lafẓ) and matter ( mādda), signification by expression ( dalīl al-lafẓ) and signification by inference ( dalīl al-ʿaql).

The book is the first in a Western European language to present the results of the excavation of Byzantine Cherson (7th-14th centuries) in the Crimea. It offers a comprehensive study of the topography of the city, its material culture, everyday life, architecture, craft production, and religious beliefs. Taking all archaeological, written and other evidence into account, it places Cherson within the overall history of the Byzantine Empire, its periphery and Black Sea-Mediterranean trade.

Jahrhunderts

Robert Gramsch

This volume contains a collective biography of those students of the medieval university of Erfurt (founded in 1392), for whom a study of the iura (canon and civil law) can be demonstrated. On the base of a prosopographical apparatus of more than 700 biographies (available on CD-ROM) their social antecedents, their courses of studies, their careers and professional activities are analyzed.
The book tries to find statistically supported answers for questions, which have been discussed by German constitutional, legal and social historians for a long time; questions which can be summarized under the term “Verwissenschaftlichung” of governmental action in late medieval Germany.
The volume also presents a contribution to the history of the medieval university of Erfurt from a prosopographical perspective.

The subject of this monograph are the theories of philosophical reflection on man in the thirteenth century. It describes and analyses the views and debates of scholastic philosophers on the scientific approach to anthropological issues. After an outline of previous research, the efforts of the magistri to integrate anthropologic studies into the framework of their sciences are examined in detail, and their ideas on the reliability and usefulness of various scientific methods, as well as their judgements on the value and dignity of different disciplines are investigated. Particular attention is given to the scholars' discussions on the interrelationship between our understanding of man and our understanding of the world as a whole. This is the first comprehensive source-based study of the subject; it draws heavily on inedited texts.

Opusculum fabularum

Die Fabelsammlung der Berliner Handschrift Theol. lat. fol. 142

Christina Meckelnborg and Bernd Schneider

This volume contains a medieval collection of Latin adaptations of Aesopian fables, the so-called Opusculum fabularum which consists of three books, each of them again containing about 50 fables. Its complete version has been handed down only in the Berlin manuscript Theol. lat. fol. 142. The critical edition of this text is the main part of the present volume. It also contains the critical edition of the text of those fables of the Opusculum fabularum that have been quoted by Conrad von Halberstadt in his Tripartitus moralium.
The present volume is the very first publication of the Opusculum fabularum and will prove most useful for latinists, medievalists and other literary scholars in their studies of the development of the Latin fable in the Middle Ages and in early modern times.

G. Noordraven

Some 25 years ago the famous nine-volume Grundrisz der Medizin der alten Ägypter by Hildegard von Deines e.a. (eds.) saw the light. One of the editors was Professor Dr. Wolfhart Westendorf, the author of the new Handbuch der altägyptischen Medizin now published in Brill's series Handbook of Oriental Studies.
At last the present handbook offers the readership an abridged and revised edition of the old Grundrisz. It deals with Ancient Egyptian Medicine from the second millennium up to the Roman period.
In selecting the material for this volume the author based himself not only on the extant papyrus texts (both hieratic and demotic), but also on relevant passages from Egyptian literature like magical texts and ostraka and on archaeological evidence (mummies, represenations of patients).
After an Introduction (science, religion, magic), there are chapters on sources, formal organisation of the underlying texts, patients and diseases, the physician (profession, social status, title, methods of treatment, dealing with drugs, using magic power, etc.) on the end of Egyptian medicine in Coptic and Greek medicine, and the Ebers and Smith Papyri (with translations). The work concludes with extensive indices (places, themes, etc.)

The Berichtigungsliste der Griechisen Papyruskunden aus Ägypten, compiled under the auspices of the 'Association Internationale de Papyrologues', is an indispensable tool for any editor or user of Greek papyrus documents. Like its predecessors, this tenth volume lists, in alphabetical order of papyri, the new corrections of readings and datings of published documents, as well as supplementary information, as they have appeared in recent literature. The book is supplied with indexes of new readings and rejected readings of Greek words. The value of the book lies in providing an overview of the explosive growth of research in Greek papyrology, the fruits of which appear in such an extremely wide spectrum of publications, that it may not completely be known or available to professional papyrologists, let alone to historians and philologists who also make use of papyrological resources. The new feature of the ninth volume, better accessibility for non-papyrologists, is continued in the present volume. For that reason, a new guide on how to use the subsequent volumes of the Berichtigungsliste is incorporated.

Aristoteles' De Anima

This publication deals with an anonymous Arabic paraphrase of Aristotle's De Anima. The paraphrase, which was translated into Persian in the thirteenth century, is to be considered as the earliest testimony of Arabo-Islamic interest in Aristotelian psychology.
The first part of the book is concerned with the Arabic and Persian manuscripts and testimonies, the Greek sources of Late Antiquity, and the question of the date and identity of the author. The second part includes a critical edition with a German translation followed by a philological and philosophical commentary in the fourth part.
The volume is of special interest for the historian of late antique, post-Alexandrian (Byzantine), and early Islamic philosophy as well as for Graeco-Arabic lexicography.
