The apostle Peter gradually became one of the most famous figures of the ancient world. His almost undisputed reputation made the disciple an exquisite anchor by which new practices within and outside the Church could be established, including innovations in fields as diverse as architecture, art, cult, epigraphy, liturgy, poetry and politics. This interdisciplinary volume inquires the way in which the figure of Peter functioned as an anchor for various people from different periods and geographical areas. The concept of Anchoring Innovation is used to investigate the history of the reception of the apostle Peter from the first century up to Charlemagne, revealing as much about Peter as about the context in which this reception took place.

Knowledge of the pragmatici sheds new light on pragmatic normative literature (mainly from the religious sphere), a genre crucial for the formation of normative orders in early modern Ibero-America. Long underrated by legal historical scholarship, these media – manuals for confessors, catechisms, and moral theological literature – selected and localised normative knowledge for the colonial worlds and thus shaped the language of normativity.

The eleven chapters of this book explore the circulation and the uses of pragmatic normative texts in the Iberian peninsula, in New Spain, Peru, New Granada and Brazil. The book reveals the functions and intellectual achievements of pragmatic literature, which condensed normative knowledge, drawing on medieval scholarly practices of ‘epitomisation’, and links the genre with early modern legal culture.

The transition zone between Africa, Asia and Europe was the most important intersection of human mobility in the medieval period. The present volume for the first time systematically covers migration histories of the regions between the Mediterranean and Central Asia and between Eastern Europe and the Indian Ocean in the centuries from Late Antiquity up to the early modern era. „Schrift besitzt die Macht, zu verewigen.“ Diese Vorstellung begleitet Schriftzeichen seit ihrer Erfindung und hat bis heute nichts von ihrer Wirkmächtigkeit eingebüßt.
Aus zeichentheoretischer Perspektive ließe sich jedoch entgegenhalten: „Nichts“ ist flüchtiger als ein Zeichen und jene Vorstellung eine bloße Behauptung. Vor diesem paradoxen Hintergrund unternimmt die Monographie den Versuch, systematisch innersprachlichen Verfahren nachzugehen, die dazu eingesetzt werden, Informationen möglichst dauerhaft festzuhalten. Sie stützt sich dabei auf literarische Texte zwischen 1755 und 1821 sowie deren historische Ko- und Kontexte. Es gelingt ihr so, im Schnittfeld von Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft sowie der Semiotik erstmals eine Typologie vorzulegen, die weit über die Zeit um 1800 und die Literatur hinaus zeichenhafte Verfahren im Dienste der „Verewigung“ zu beschreiben vermag.

‚Skandale‘ um geheim gehaltene Verstrickungen in den Nationalsozialismus haben u. a. mit Grass, Andersch oder Walser zentrale Mitglieder der Gruppe 47 betroffen. Die Studie fragt erstmals systematisch nach der Bedeutung dieser Einflüsse für die literarischen Texte der Gruppe 47.
Ausgehend vom gegenwärtigen Bild der Gruppe 47, von Theorien narrativer Ethik und der Geschichtsforschung zur „NS-Moral“ fragt die Studie nach diskursiven Verknüpfungen von Moral und Zugehörigkeit in den wichtigsten Texten der Gruppe 47. Qualitative und quantitative Analysen zeigen die Vorherrschaft eines partikularen Moralverständnisses sowie in mehreren Texten einen Zusammenhang dieser Moralvorstellungen mit literarischem Antisemitismus. Daneben finden sich – u. a. in Bezugnahmen auf Bubers dialogisches Prinzip, das gerade die Hinwendung zum ‚radikal Anderen‘ als ethisches Handeln konzipiert – auch alternative Ethiken; allerdings oft in Texten marginalisierter oder als untypisch geltender Mitglieder wie Bachmann und Celan.

Arabic and its Alternatives discusses the complicated relationships between language, religion and communal identities in the Middle East in the period following the First World War. This volume takes its starting point in the non-Arabic and non-Muslim communities, tracing their linguistic and literary practices as part of a number of interlinked processes, including that of religious modernization, of new types of communal identity politics and of socio-political engagement with the emerging nation states and their accompanying nationalisms. These twentieth-century developments are firmly rooted in literary and linguistic practices of the Ottoman period, but take new turns under influence of colonization and decolonization, showing the versatility and resilience as much as the vulnerability of these linguistic and religious minorities in the region.

In Mapping the Pāśupata Landscape: Narrative, Place, and the Śaiva Imaginary in Early Medieval North India, Elizabeth A. Cecil explores the sacred geography of the earliest community of Śiva devotees called the Pāśupatas. This book brings the narrative cartography of the Skandapurāṇa into conversation with physical landscapes, inscriptions, monuments, and icons in order to examine the ways in which Pāśupatas were emplaced in regional landscapes and to emphasize the use of material culture as media through which notions of belonging and identity were expressed. By exploring the ties between the formation of early Pāśupata communities and the locales in which they were embedded, this study reflects critically upon the ways in which community building was coincident with place-making in Early Medieval India.

Nie schien der Zugriff auf Filmgeschichte leichter als heute: Mit wenigen Klicks kann man etwa ‚Klassiker‘ anschauen, sie kopieren und teilen – noch dazu digital remastered, ‚schöner als je zuvor‘! In der jüngeren Medienkultur werden ehemals analoge Filme digitalisiert, durchlaufen ständige Transformationen, um in neuen Medienumgebungen sichtbar zu bleiben. Die Studie widmet sich den grundsätzlichen Fragen, in welcher Form die vermeintlich allgegenwärtig verfügbaren Bewegt-Bilder aus der Filmgeschichte überhaupt in die Zirkulation der digitalen Kultur gelangen und welche ästhetischen, theoretischen, sozio-kulturellen wie historiographischen Konsequenzen sich daraus ergeben.
