Ancient philosophy has from the outset inspired phenomenological philosophers in a special way. Phenomenological Interpretations of Ancient Philosophy offers fresh perspectives on the manner in which ancient Greek thought has influenced phenomenology and traces the history of this reception. Unlike various related treatments, the present volume offers a broad account of this topic that includes chapters on Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Jacob Klein, Hannah Arendt, Eugen Fink, Jan Patočka, Emmanuel Levinas, and Jacques Derrida.

This collection of essays, edited by Kristian Larsen and Pål Rykkja Gilbert, is addressed to students of ancient philosophy and the phenomenological tradition as well as to readers who have a general interest in the fascinating, yet complex, connection between ancient Greek thought and phenomenological philosophy.

In this book, Gino Zaccaria offers a philosophical meditation on the issue of art in light of its originary sense. He shows how this sense can be fully understood provided that our thinking, on the one hand, returns to the ancient Greek world where it must heed the voice and hints of the goddess Athena, and, on the other hand, listens to “artist-thinkers” close to our current epoch, such as Cézanne, van Gogh and Boccioni. Indeed, the path of this meditation has as its guide the well-known sentence by the painter from Aix-en-Provence, which reads: “Je vous dois la vérité en peinture, et je vous la dirai !”. What will finally appear in this way will not be an abstract or historical notion of art, but its enigma; that is to say, the promise of “another initiation” of art itself.

If the universe were conceived to fulfill a certain divine plan or to manifest God’s will and glory, what would the place of an individual be within this plan? What is more, if, from the very beginning of its existence and through divine providence, it were predestined to be driven toward a certain end, how could people adjust their individual lives to the incognizable universal design and react to the obscure future fraught with both luck and failure?

These questions, which have occupied humanity for centuries, formed a remarkable element of early modern European thought. This collection of essays presents new insights into what shaped and constituted reflections on fate and fortune between, roughly, 1400 and 1650, both in word and image. This volume argues that these ideas were emblematic of a more fundamental argument about the self, society, and the universe and shows that their influence was more widespread, geographically and thematically, than hitherto assumed.

Le nouveau fantastique de Jean-Pierre Andrevon analyse les facettes étranges du fantastique de Jean-Pierre Andrevon, écrivain contemporain appelé le « King » ou « Lovecraft » français. Andrevon propose une nouvelle vision du fantastique ancré profondément dans le quotidien contemporain, en apparence monotone et banal, dans lequel évoluent aussi bien ses personnages que ses lecteurs. L’auteur révèle ainsi le revers angoissant du monde, qui devient une source d’horreur puissante car familière au lecteur : catastrophes naturelles (pandémies mystérieuses, désastres climatiques, fin de l’Anthropocène) et historiques (guerres, totalitarismes), problèmes sociaux et psychologiques (folie, psychoses collectives, solitude). Un signe emblématique du fantastique andrevonien est également son dialogue avec le cinéma d’horreur.

Le nouveau fantastique de Jean-Pierre Andrevon analyses the uncanny facets of the fantastic by Jean-Pierre Andrevon, a contemporary writer called “the French Stephen King” or “the French H.P. Lovecraft". Andrevon presents a new vision of the fantastic, deeply rooted in contemporary everyday life, seemingly monotonous and banal, in which both his characters and his readers evolve. Thus, the author reveals a different, harrowing side of the world familiar to the reader, as it turns into a powerful source of horror: natural catastrophes (mysterious pandemics, climate-related disasters, end of the Anthropocene), historical tragedies (wars, totalitarianism), social and psychological problems (madness, collective psychosis, loneliness). Another hallmark of Andrevonian fantastic is its dialogue with horror cinema.

Presenting new critical perspectives on J.G. Fichte’s Wissenschaftslehre, this volume of English articles by an international group of scholars addresses the topic of first principles in Fichte’s writings. Especially discussed are the central text of his Jena period, the 1794/95 Grundlage der gesammten Wissenschaftslehre, as well as later versions like the Wissenschaftslehre nova methodo (1796-99) and the presentations of 1804 and 1805. Also included are new studies on the first principles of the particular sub-disciplines of Fichte’s system, such as the doctrines of aesthetics, nature, right, ethics, and history.

Recent developments within and beyond Europe have variously challenged the very idea of Europe, calling it into question and demanding reconsideration of its underlying assumptions. The essays collected here reassess the contemporary position of a perceived “European” identity in the world, overshadowed as it is by the long antecedents and current crisis of triumphalist Eurocentrism. While Eurocentrism itself is still a potent mind-set, it is now increasingly challenged by intra-European crises and by the emergence of autonomously non-European perceptions of Europe. Early Psychoanalytic Religious Writings presents, in one edited volume, many of the foundational writings in the psychoanalytic study of religion. Genealogy, Current Trends, and New Interpretations
This book invites to rethink certain aspects of halal, and in particular the issue of the halal market and halal certification in Muslim-minority contexts. Rather than limiting itself to elucidating the doctrinal traditions relating to halal/haram, or on the contrary, focusing only on the external economic, financial, political or demographic factors that explain the changes taking place, Rethinking Halal shows the need to underline the points of balance between the aspects of religious doctrine on the one hand and the economic or political contextual aspects on the other hand. Through the study of various countries, Rethinking Halal demonstrates that Islam underwent a process of positivisation, that is, a kind of reframing of its rules and principles through the lens of a characteristically modern standardising, scientificising, and systematising mind.
