This book offers a synchronic description of the dialect of a village in the western part of the Pskov oblast (north-western Russia). The dialects spoken there have long since attracted the interest of linguists. This is mainly due to features of the Old Novgorod dialect preserved in that area, such as the absence of the Second Palatalisation and cokan’e, i.e. non-distinction of dental and palatal affricates. The dialect of Ostrovcy shows a high concentration of such features. The book is relevant in yet another respect: it is one of the very few extensive descriptions of a Russian dialect. The description is based on fieldwork by the author in recent years. It concentrates on phonology, morphology and lexicon, but also gives an account of the most interesting syntactic and semantic characteristics.

Zur Normierung der Adjektivdeklination in der ersten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts
Diese Untersuchung zeigt, daß in dem Zeitraum, in dem nach allgemeinem Konsens der Sprachgeschichtsschreibung die Normierung der Adjektivdeklination durchgeführt wurde, eine Vertikalisierung funktionaler Varianten stattgefunden hat. Anhand von Texten verschiedener literarischer Textsorten des normsetzenden Sprachraums werden variante Belege der ersten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts ermittelt und diskutiert. Alle analysierten Belege weisen eine systematische, funktionale Verwendung der Adjektivdeklination auf, die sich in den entsprechenden morphosyntaktischen Umgebungen im späteren Neuhochdeutschen nicht mehr findet, da sie im Normierungsprozeß, oft zugunsten einer anderen funktionalen Verwendung, aufgegeben wird. Die Vertikalisierung des Variantenspektrums ist im Fall der Adjektivdeklination nicht durch die Bevorzugung der Varianten des normsetzenden Sprachraums zu erklären, denn auch hier vollzieht sich eine Vertikalisierung funktionaler Verwendungsweisen. Um auslösende Faktoren der Variantenhierarchisierung zu ermitteln, werden die Aussagen der zeitgenössischen Sprachtheoretiker zur Adjektivdeklination herangezogen. Deren Schriften belegen jedoch nur in Einzelfällen zugrundeliegende Auswahlprinzipien. Statt dessen enthalten sie umfangreiche Angaben zur Rechtfertigung oder Pejoration von Varianten, die die Vertikalisierung als eine am Sozialprestige orientierte Variantenhierarchisierung offenbart.

As Karin Aijmer writes in this book, 'The contrastive or comparative perspective ... makes it possible to dig deeper and to ask new questions about the relationship between languages with the aim of sharpening our conceptions of cross-linguistic correspondences and adding to our knowledge of the languages compared.'
The papers in this volume are a showcase of the great variety of purposes to which bilingual and multilingual corpora can be put. They do not only lend themselves to descriptive and applied approaches, but are also suitable for theory-oriented studies. The range of linguistic phenomena covered by the various approaches is very wide; the papers focus on fields of research like syntax, discourse, semantics, information structure, lexis, and translation studies. The range of languages studied comprises English, Norwegian, Swedish, German, Dutch, and Portuguese. In addition to purely linguistic papers, there are contributions on computer programs developed for the compilation and use of bilingual and multilingual corpora.
