This casebook edition comprises critical essays about and an English translation of La Diabolique Tragédie. Each essay is an example of what Peter Barry has called ‘Crisis Critique,’ the commentaries ranging from the psychoanalytical, to the feminist, the historicist and the religious. A ‘poème en prose’ dating from the start of the nineteenth century, La Diabolique Tragédie was first published in 2011. It was the work of a forger whose (unrealized) endgame was for the text to be presented to the public of the day as an authentic work of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The critical essays represent a series of impressions of different types of literary critics, which – the author hopes – will prove a good match for the forger’s ‘mock Rousseau.’
Our identities are shaped by narratives, and cinema contributes to that process. While there is substantial scholarship on both narrative identity and film narrative, there is very little investigation of the intersection between them. This book provides that, with particular attention to how the interaction between film narratives and life narratives affect the meaning of life. Traditional issues like spectator activity and realism appear in a different light when viewed through this interaction. It also reveals how film can both help and hinder the meaning of our lives by sustaining oppressive narratives or promoting new narrative possibilities.
So little happens in the earliest surviving plays that their dramatic status almost escapes the reader. This calls for a revision of traditional views and historiographies of dramatic literature: for example, how did action come to define drama, and how did these genre developments influence reception? Above all, what constitutes drama when action is as optional as it apparently was in the 470s-460s BCE? This book rethinks Aeschylean theatre as a practice that combines elements of storytelling with enacted responses to them, and reads the literary remains of this practice from cross-generic perspectives (ancient, modern, and transhistorical). Recognizing the importance of embedded narratives in Aeschylus helps us adapt our poetological frameworks to his art at last, rather than vice versa.

This essay collection focuses on enclosure, deception and secrecy in three spatial areas – the body, clothing and furniture. It contributes to the study of private life and explores the micro-history of hidden spaces. The contents of pockets may prove a surer index to their owner’s real thoughts than anything they say; a piece of furniture with ingenious mechanisms created to conceal secrets may also reveal someone’s attempts to break in and thus give away as much as it holds. Though the book’s focus is on particular material or imagined objects, taken as a whole it exemplifies a range of interdisciplinary encounters between history, literary criticism, art history, philosophy, psychoanalysis, sociology, criminology, archival studies, museology and curating, and women’s studies.

Classical-style poetry in modern China and other Sinitic-speaking localities is attracting greater attention with the recent upsurge in academic revision of modern Chinese literary history. Using the concept of cultural transplantation, this monograph attempts to illustrate the uniqueness, compatibility, and adaptability of classical Chinese poetry in colonial Singapore as well as its sustained connections with literary tradition and homeland. It demonstrates how the reading of classical Chinese poetry can better our understanding of Singapore’s political, social, and cultural history, deepen knowledge of the transregional relationship between China and Nanyang, and fine-tune, redress, and enrich our perception of Singapore Chinese literature, Sinophone literature, the Chinese diaspora, and global Chinese identity.
Georg Brandes (1842-1927) was one of the leading literary critics in Europe of his time. His Main Currents of Nineteenth Century Literature (1872-1890) was a foundational text to the field of comparative literature and extolled by Thomas Mann as the “Bible of the young intellectual Europe at the turn of the century.” Georg Brandes eventually developed into a truly global public intellectual, living by his pen and public lectures. On the eve of World War I, he was one of the most sought-after commentators, vigorously opposing all conflicting factions. This book seeks to understand Brandes’ trajectory, to evaluate Brandes’ significance for current discussions of literary criticism and public engagement, and to introduce Brandes to an international audience.
