Philosophy and Religion is dedicated to a critical study of religious attitudes, values, and beliefs. PAR welcomes a wide variety of philosophical approaches to general and specific topics arising from the whole spectrum of religious traditions.

Philosophy and Religion is a special series in the Value Inquiry Book Series.
Philosophy and Religion is cosponsored by The Centre for the Study of Philosophy and Religion, Cape Breton University, Nova Scotia, Canada.
The series Jewish Thought and Philosophy aims to present new and original scholarship on Jewish thought and philosophy from the Middle Ages to the present day. Based on a broad concept of Jewish intellectual history, it covers medieval and modern halakhic thought, philosophical exegesis of the Bible, medieval and modern philosophy, theology, mysticism, political theory, Jewish social thought and ethics, including the interaction with non-Jewish thought. The focus is on high scholarly standards and innovative methodological approach. While monographs are preferred, excellent collected volumes exploring important aspects of Jewish intellectual history as well as editions and translations of essential texts are also welcome.

The series published an average of 2.5 volumes per year over the last 5 years.

Maimonides Review of Philosophy and Religion is an annual collection of double-blind peer-reviewed articles, which seeks to provide a broad international arena for an intellectual exchange of ideas between the disciplines of philosophy, theology, religion, cultural history, and literature and to showcase their multifarious junctures within the framework of Jewish studies.

In Supplier Dieu dans l’Égypte toulounide, Mathieu Tillier and Naïm Vanthieghem provide the edition, translation and study of a booklet preserved on papyrus and dated 267/880-881. It offers a selection of some forty hadiths heard by Khālid ibn Yazīd, a minor local scholar, concerning the invocations that every pious Muslim has to use when addressing God. Composed during the reign of the famous governor Aḥmad ibn Ṭūlūn, the first autonomous ruler of Islamic Egypt, this manuscript bears exceptional testimony to the way traditional sciences were taught at the time. Not only does it open an unprecedented window on the milieu of ordinary transmitters, whose names soon fell into oblivion, but it also sheds new light on the Tulunids’ religious policy and on the islamisation of Egypt.

Un opuscule issu de son enseignement, portant la date de 267/880–881, a survécu sur papyrus. Mathieu Tillier et Naïm Vanthieghem en proposent ici l’édition, la traduction et l’étude. Composé sous le règne du fameux gouverneur Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn, premier souverain autonome de l’Égypte islamique, ce manuscrit offre un témoignage exceptionnel sur la manière dont les sciences traditionnelles étaient alors enseignées. Il ouvre non seulement une fenêtre inédite sur le milieu des transmetteurs ordinaires, dont les noms tombèrent rapidement dans l’oubli, mais vient aussi éclairer d’un nouveau jour la politique religieuse des Toulounides et la dynamique d’islamisation de l’Égypte.

The first scholarly book on Thomas Vaughan (1621–1666) draws from recent studies in Western esotericism to place his famously difficult writings in their proper context. It shows that they develop themes from a distinctively Rosicrucian synthesis of alchemy, magic, and Christian cabala. Vaughan introduced Rosicrucian documents to English readers and placed them in older philosophical contexts during the breakdown of censorship that followed the English Revolution against the old order in politics and religion. Willard’s book will appeal to students of early modern ideas about religion, science, and society as they were seen by an intelligent and eloquent outsider.

Eric Voegelin-Studies: Supplements offers an ideal forum to further elaborate on specific aspects of the contributions in the Yearbook. This creates scope for smaller or larger monographs as well as publications by several authors. The Supplements are conceived as an international and interdisciplinary project. They are intended to expand scholarly exchange and international collaboration on Voegelin’s work.
Between Secularization and Reform: Religion in the Enlightenment provides a critical reappraisal of the idea that the Enlightenment is at the headwaters of secularization. Contributors analyze early modern religious controversies, the significance of faith in national contexts, clandestine philosophy, varieties of rational religion, and the intermingling of heterodoxy with unbelief in the writings of key thinkers and less famous figures.
The volume encourages revisiting descriptions of the “Age of Lights” that use such categories as “moderate – radical” and “religious – secular.” Picturing the deep transformation undergone by religion in the Enlightenment, it draws a thin line between religious reforms and attempts to eliminate religious faith from the public sphere and individuals’ lives.

This interdisciplinary study, the first to interpret the plays of Shakespeare in the light of the esoteric religious doctrines of the Corpus Hermeticum, holds answers to these and other puzzling questions.
In The Eastern Christian Tradition in Modern Russian Thought and Beyond, Teresa Obolevitch reflects on the ontology and anthropology of neo-patristic synthesis and its connection to Western philosophy, with a focus on the work of Georges Florovsky and Vladimir Lossky. The book also examines the concept of apophaticism in Russian philosophy: in neo-patristic synthesis and the thought of Semyon Frank and Lev Karsavin, as well as in epistemological and cosmological comparison with process theology. Additionally, Obolevitch’s work undertakes a comparative analysis of the reception of Russian sophiology in the West, especially in the work of Thomas Merton, and also considers similarities between neo-patristic synthesis and Zen Buddhism in the thought of Merton and Sergey Horujy.

This ground-breaking study looks at his background in Russian Orthodoxy, at less well-known writings of Arthur Lourié and Pierre Souvtchinsky and at the Catholic philosophy of Jacques Maritain, that shed light on the crucial link between Stravinsky’s spirituality and his restoration of time in music.
Recent neuroscience research supports Stravinsky’s eventual adoption of serialism as the natural and logical outcome of his spiritual and musical quest.
