Medicine, Ideas and Culture in the Modern Era, 1900-1946

Motherhood holds a special place in Argentinian culture. Representing Argentinian Mothers examines the historical intersections of medicine and culture that have underpinned the representations of motherhood during the first half of the twentieth century. From the emergence of a medicalised maternal figure at the beginning of the century to the appearance of a new, politicised mother-figure by the time of Eva Perón, the contentious representations of motherhood constitute a privileged viewpoint to explore the tensions and conflicts underlying the country’s modernisation process. At the core of the analysis is an evaluation of the way in which medical representations of motherhood have been implicated, confirmed or contested in other significant areas of the social and cultural fields.
Through detailed examination of a rich selection of sources including medical texts, newspapers, novels, photojournalism, and paintings, Representing Argentinian Mothers adopts an interdisciplinary approach and an innovative framework based on categories and notions drawn from the History of Ideas and Cultural History. By enquiring about the influence of medicine in the field of ideas, beliefs and images, Yolanda Eraso elaborates new insights to understand their interaction, which will appeal to anyone with an interest in the Medical Humanities.
This book psychoanalyzes a small Mexican city to figure out how the city makes sense of both herself and her many Others in the face of constant change. It puts the city on the couch and works through her past and present relationships, analyzing issues surrounding sexuality, the compulsion to repeat, transferences and desires.

Ever since its appearance, Miguel de Cervantes’ Don Quixote has exerted a powerful influence on the artistic imagination all around the world. This cross-cultural volume offers important new readings of canonical reinterpretations of the Quixote: from Unamuno to Borges, from Ortega y Gasset to Calvino, from Mark Twain to Carlos Fuentes. But to the prestigious list of well-known authors who acknowledged Cervantes’ influence, it also adds new and surprising names, such as that of Subcomandante Marcos, who gives a Cervantine twist to his Mexican Zapatista revolution. La reflexión desarrollada en este volumen parte de la recepción polémica de Las ínsulas extrañas, antología de poesía en lengua española (1950-2000), editada por E. Milán, A. Sánchez Robayna, J. A. Valente y B. Varela, poetas que optaron solidariamente por presentar un conjunto programático de poesía independiente, transgresora del canon mimético mayoritario, arraigada en la ‘tradición moderna’ cuya larga historia rebosa las fronteras nacionales y la misma literatura. La controversia se extendió a la antología La otra joven poesía española, publicada por A. Krawietz y F. León, que seguía la pauta trazada por los maestros. Se cuestionó los ‘principios modernos’ poéticos y artísticos en general. Nos pareció oportuno preguntarnos cómo se pueden entender aquellos principios y por qué han despertado tanto recelo en sectores influyentes de la crítica española. Hemos interrogado a poetas representados en las citadas antologías y a otros más independientes, afines o escépticos. J. Doce, A. Gamoneda, J. A. García Román, A. Krawietz, F. León, M. López, J. A. Masoliver, E. Ortega, P. Provencio, J. L. Rey, J. Riechmann, A. Sánchez Robayna, V. Valero han expuesto cada uno su punto de vista, ilustrándolo con una selección de poemas. A la vez, críticos conocidos por sus estudios sobre la modernidad poética, como J. Ardanuy, A. Domínguez, M. Fernández Casanova, M. E. Harretche, J. Mayhew, V. Nardoni, E. Ortega, J. Pont, L. Romera, proponen según distintos enfoques contribuciones panorámicas o centradas en determinados poetas, muy leídos o menos leídos, mayores y jóvenes. Nuestra intención es contribuir a la valoración de la mal querida modernidad española.

El cine español contemporáneo (1990-2005) dedica mucha atención a la rememoración del pasado (Segunda República, la Guerra Civil, el período franquista,…) y la realidad social (el paro, la violencia doméstica, inmigración, eutanasia,…). Directores renombrados como Pedro Almodóvar, Alejandro Amenábar, Fernando León de Aranoa, Icíar Bollaín, o Isabel Coixet, muestran este interés dentro de sus miradas cinematográficas. La gran popularidad de este cine ha estimulado su migración en pantallas ajenas y dentro de contextos universitarios nacionales e internacionales. Este libro reúne unos veinte artículos, de investigadores americanos y europeos, que ilustran las múltiples tradiciones culturales en vigor dentro de los estudios cinematográficos, y que enfocan al mismo tiempo el tema central del libro: ¿Cómo se puede leer, la mirada de los autores españoles, sobre el pasado y el presente, dentro del contexto de su cine nacional?
Spanish and English are two of the most widely spoken languages in today’s world, and are linked by a colonial presence in the Americas that has often provoked turbulent relations between Britain and Spain. Despite abundant exchanges between Spain and the British Isles, and evident contact in the Americas, cross-cultural analyses are infrequent, and ironically language barriers still prevail in a world the media and globalization would appear to render borderless: English and Hispanic Studies have seldom converged, the islands of the Caribbean continue to be separated by language, while the new empire, the United States, has difficulty in admitting to its Hispanic component, let alone recognizing that the name “America” encompasses a wider continent. Post/Imperial Encounters: Anglo-Hispanic Cultural Relations attempts to bridge this gap through articles on literature, history and culture that concentrate primarily on three periods: the colonial interventions of Britain and Spain in the Americas, the Spanish Civil War and the present world, with its global culture and new forms of colonialism.

‘Censorship’ has become a fashionable topic, not only because of newly available archival material from Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, but also because the ‘new censorship’ (inspired by the works of Foucault and Bourdieu) has widened the very concept of censorhip beyond its conventional boundaries. This volume uses these new materials and perspectives to address the relationship of censorship to cultural selection processes (such as canon formation), economic forces, social exclusion, professional marginalization, silencing through specialized discourses, communicative norms, and other forms of control and regulation.
Two articles in this collection investigate these issue theoretically. The remaining eight contributions address the issues by investigating censorial practice across time and space by looking at the closure of Paul’s playhouse in 1606; the legacy of 19th century American regulations and representation of women teachers; the relationship between official and samizdat publishing in Communist Poland; the ban on Gegenwartsfilme (films about contemporary society) in East Germany in 1965/66; the censorship of modernist music in Weimar and Nazi Germany; the GDR’s censorship of jazz and avantgarde music in the early 1950s; Aesopian strategies of textual resistance in the pop music of apartheid South Africa and in the stories of Mario Benedetti.
Este volumen reúne una serie de ensayos cuyo origen fue un coloquio doble – Reescrituras I y II – organizado en Leiden en mayo 2001 por el Departamento de Lenguas y Culturas de América Latina, la Cátedra de Estudios Brasileños y la Netherlands Graduate School for Literary Studies (OSL), con el apoyo de la Universidad de Aarhus y del University College London.
En Imagen y Memoria (Reescrituras I) las aproximaciones, cada una a su modo, giran en torno a un aspecto del tema propuesto: desde el tratamiento de varios niveles de intertextualidad hasta la cuestión compleja de la presencia simultánea de múltiples memorias en la literatura. Muchos trabajos problematizan el rescate de las voces del pasado, oscurecidas y marginalizadas, que dialogan con el presente o se mezclan con él creando situaciones anacrónicas que al fin y al cabo terminan por eliminar las barreras entre lo erudito y lo popular, lo moderno y lo tradicional, lo propio y lo ajeno.
En Jorge Luis Borges y la cultura popular (Reescrituras II) el hilo conductor es la propuesta inicial del coloquio: la escritura de Jorge Luis Borges como mito, como estereotipo de las Reescrituras de lo popular. La hipótesis fue la del estudiante de “El acercamiento a Almotásim”: “En algún punto de la tierra hay un hombre de quien procede esa claridad, en algún punto de la tierra está el hombre que es igual a esa claridad”.
El volumen se cierra con un ensayo en el cual la autora asume en primera persona los desgarramientos y las reescrituras de la modernidad.
