In der Geschichte der Komiktheorie ist die Medienspezifik der Komik bislang noch kaum erforscht worden. Bisher konzentrierten sich die literatur- und kulturwissenschaftlichen Untersuchungen zumeist auf die Gattungsspezifik der Komik, hier vor allem auf literarische Komik, oder auf kulturelle Abhängigkeiten, wenn sie nicht spezielle Gebiete der Komik wie den Schwarzen Humor oder Komik und Holocaust zum Gegenstand hatten. Zwar ist auch das Medium Film untersucht worden, aber nicht unter der Leitfrage, was das Komische im Film von sprachlicher Komik unterscheidet. Die traditionellen Komiktheorien (Inkongruenztheorie, Überlegenheitstheorie, Entlastungstheorie etc.) sind vor allem am Text oder an sozial-psychologischen Implikationen der Komik ausgerichtet. Es gibt aber Verfahrensweisen der Komik, die beispielsweise spezifisch visuell oder spezifisch auditiv sind oder einem Widerspruch zwischen Bild und Ton erwachsen. Im interdisziplinären Dialog zwischen Philosophie, Literatur-, Sprach-, Musik- und Medienwissenschaft fragt der Band nach der für verschiedene Medien und mediale Konstellationen spezifischen Komik.
