The deployment of Autonomous Weapons gives rise to ongoing debate in society and at the United Nations, in the context of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons. Yet there little empirical research has been done on this topic. This volume fills that gap by offering an empirical study based on military personnel and civilians working at the Dutch Ministry of Defence. It yields insight into how Autonomous Weapons are perceived by the military and general public; and which moral values are considered important in relation to their deployment. The research approach used is the Value-Sensitive Design (VSD) method that allows for the consideration of human values throughout the design process of technology. The outcome indicates that military personnel and civilians attribute more agency (the capacity to think and plan) to an Autonomous Weapon than to a Human Operated Drone. In addition, it is clear that common ground exists between military and societal groups in their perception of the values of human dignity and anxiety. These two values arise often in the discourse, and addressing them is essential when considering the ethics of the deployment of Autonomous Weapons. The text of this volume is also offered in parallel French and German translation.
This volume of Annotated Legal Documents on Islam in Europe covers the Czech Republic and consists of an annotated collection of legal documents affecting the status of Islam and Muslims. The legal texts are published in the original Czech language while the annotations and supporting material are in English. By legal documents are meant the texts of legislation, including relevant secondary legislation, as well as significant court decisions. Each legal text is preceded by an introduction describing the historical, political and legal circumstances of its adoption, plus a short paragraph summarising its content. The focus of the collection is on the religious dimensions of being Muslim in Europe, i.e. on individuals' access to practise their religious obligations and on the ability to organise and manifest their religious life.

Presenting new critical perspectives on J.G. Fichte’s Wissenschaftslehre, this volume of English articles by an international group of scholars addresses the topic of first principles in Fichte’s writings. Especially discussed are the central text of his Jena period, the 1794/95 Grundlage der gesammten Wissenschaftslehre, as well as later versions like the Wissenschaftslehre nova methodo (1796-99) and the presentations of 1804 and 1805. Also included are new studies on the first principles of the particular sub-disciplines of Fichte’s system, such as the doctrines of aesthetics, nature, right, ethics, and history.
This 50th volume in the book series ‘Global Perspectives on Higher Education' offers a stimulating and thoughtful assessment of higher education from a global perspective which addresses the challenges and prospects for the next decade. The author argues in his essay on the Revolution of the Right to Education that the birth of the human right to education, after a millennia-long gestation, has opened up a new chapter in the History of Education. Moreover, its normative, jurisprudential, doctrinal, and programmatic developments are constituents of an International Education Law that is now the highest source in the hierarchy of the contemporary normativity on education, to which the Education Law in States Parties should conform. Therefore, it should be recognised and studied as a new legal and educational discipline, the source of principles of legitimacy and quality of education.

This book offers an interdisciplinary and topical introduction to the International Education Law, broadly defined. It explains in what ways the normative integrity of the right to education carries far-reaching revolutionary significance, corollary of the Revolution of Human Rights and the Revolution of the Rights of the Child.
In Theologising with the Sacred ‘Prostitutes’ of South India, Eve Rebecca Parker theologises with the Dalit women who from childhood have been dedicated to village goddesses and used as ‘sacred’ sex workers. Parker uses ethnographic, anthropological, theological, hermeneutical and historical research and analysis in order to critically engage with the lived religiosity and daily struggles of the dedicated women, known as devadāsīs. In doing so, she works towards an Indecent Dalit Liberation Theology that challenges systems of oppression and cultures of impunity, including casteism, sexism, classism and a history of socio-political and religious marginalisation. The result is a profound theologising of struggle and resistance with the sexual narratives of the oppressed.

Die Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie (ANT) zählt zu den meistdiskutierten Theorie- und Methodenansätzen der Gegenwart. In historischen Fallstudien vom Mittelalter bis zum 20. Jahrhundert werden ihre Potentiale für die Geschichtswissenschaft ausgeleuchtet.
Das über den Menschen hinaus erweiterte Akteurskonzept der ANT gilt vielen als epistemologische Provokation. Die Ansätze der ANT gehen jedoch weit darüber hinaus und lassen sich weder auf Geschichten vermeintlich zum Leben erweckter Objekte noch auf das Werk Bruno Latours reduzieren. Trotz der Analyse historischer Gegenstände durch einige Akteur-Netzwerk-Theoretiker bleibt die Historizität jedoch eine Art blinder Fleck des Ansatzes. Die Aufsätze des Bandes nehmen dies zum Anlass, um Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der ANT für die historiographische Praxis aufzuzeigen.
