The principal task of the book series Poznań Studies in the Philosophy of the Sciences and the Humanities is to promote those developments in philosophy that respect the tradition of great philosophical ideas, on the one hand, and the manner of philosophical thinking introduced by analytical philosophy, on the other. One of the standing aims of the series in the past has been to provide a forum of exchange of ideas between philosophers of both sides of the Iron Curtain. The series publishes guest-edited volumes devoted to the philosophy of the natural sciences, the social sciences and the humanities as well as to foundational topics in metaphysics, epistemology and social philosophy.

Semiotics: Signs of the Times is Brill’s new series devoted to the study of semiotics across disciplines. This book series starts from the general idea of semiotic signs, divided into icons, indexes, and symbols. Semiotics gives meaning to signs, sign functions, and sign processes. It is also concerned with sign-users (senders and receivers) and how signs are transmitted from one organism to another. To give meaning happens in everyday experience as well as experimentation. Semiotics seeks to discover how the signs of language, gestures, visual images, music, dance, theater, as well as medical and psychological symptoms, architecture, and political theory embark with a theory of signs to give belief, values, and techniques which serve for theoretical foundations and interdisciplinary method in sciences and humanities.

Philosophy as a Way of Life (PWL) is both a meta-philosophy and a methodological approach to the study of philosophy, inspired by the work of the French scholar Pierre Hadot (1922-2010). As a methodology, PWL emphasizes that all ancient philosophical works reflect pedagogical and psychagogic concerns, and argues that these features should continue to be taken into account in contemporary philosophy. It is based largely on the practice of “spiritual exercises”, intended to transform the practitioner’s way of perceiving the world, and hence her mode of being, in order to enable her to lead a freer, more happy existence. Thus, PWL views philosophy in its fullest sense as profoundly transformational.
Philosophy as a Way of Life: Texts and Studies will make available English translations of key studies on PWL and publish scholarly monographs and edited collections that consider its different aspects and implications.
Books in this series will explore PWL in antiquity, the renaissance, the early modern period, and up to the present, PWL as a methodological approach to the history of philosophy, the implications of PWL for understanding education and its history, the cross-cultural possibilities it opens up, the relationships between PWL, virtue ethics and philosophy of culture, and the different literary genres of PWL, including the way these genres impact the style and content of ancient, medieval and early modern philosophical works.

Over the last several decades an increasing number of people have studied film with a general interest in philosophy. Philos-sophia, the love of wisdom, is an attempt at interpreting or questioning human existence and the world in its entirety. Naturally film can be one of its subjects. In this series, philosophical writers account for their experience of specific films, directors, certain themes, or the phenomenon of film in general. Philosophy of film exceeds the schedule of mere interpretation and puts film in relationship with classical philosophical questions such as (its own) essence, truth, or beauty. Those reflections can also take the form of film aesthetics and film theory, which are philosophical inasmuch as their approaches are methodologically sophisticated and they transgress empiricism. Benefiting from the intellectual wealth of the entire history of the humanities, this series is an ideal source for anyone interested in the philosophical dimensions of cinema.

Past, present and future of knowledge inscription
Brill’s Scholarly Communication offers a new venue for original studies into the mutual shaping of reading, writing and scholarship in the past, present and future. It also welcomes manuscripts that interrogate this mutual shaping with respect to science. The International Association for Aesthetics’ book series, Transcultural Aesthetics, represents research findings and continuing discussions by members of the International Association for Aesthetics (IAA) and by invited guest-authors and guest-editors as well. The multinational character of IAA, its geographical and ethnic diversity, provides, through these monographs and edited volumes, a forum for the critical interpretation of issues and debates within contemporary global aesthetics. Furthermore, this poly-facetted spectrum generates a repertoire differing in methodological perspectives, disciplines, and specializations. The association is thus addressing with its series some of the most urgent global challenges from the perspective of aesthetics: inter- and trans-disciplinary western and non-western aesthetics, geopolitical aesthetics (ecologically and politically motivated migration; re-evaluating colonialism and its cultural heritage), relations between philosophical and cultural oriented aesthetics, media- and techno-aesthetics, aesthetics of historical and contemporary arts. The Transcultural Aesthetics book series publishes individual and collective works in which historical, geographical, and contemporary problems of understanding and developing aesthetic theories are elaborated in a transdisciplinary way, thus exploring novel fields of aesthetic discourse.
