Animal Biology, publishes high quality papers and focuses on integration of the various disciplines within the broad field of zoology. These disciplines include behaviour, developmental biology, ecology, endocrinology, evolutionary biology, genomics, morphology, neurobiology, physiology, systematics and theoretical biology. Purely descriptive papers will not be considered for publication.
Animal Biology is the official journal of the Royal Dutch Zoological Society since its foundation in 1872. The journal was initially called Archives Néerlandaises de Zoologie, which was changed in 1952 to Netherlands Journal of Zoology, the current name was established in 2003.

Behaviour is interested in all aspects of behaviour, spanning ecology, psychology, (neuro)physiology, learning, cognition, and emotion. We welcome contributions on all animal species, including humans, as well as studies on artificial forms of behaviour (AI, robotics) and plant signalling behaviour.
Evolutionary approaches, which focus on the advantages of behaviour or cognitive capacities for organisms and their reproduction, are emphasized both at a theoretical level and in relation to specific behaviours. Research article, Reviews, Commentary/ Reflection, Opinion, Hypothesis paper, Anecdotes, Special Issue.
The journal Behaviour has a long tradition of publishing systematic observations of spontaneous behaviour, but also welcomes submissions describing well-controlled laboratory experiments or computational models of behaviour or its evolution. Behaviour covers the entire animal kingdom, from invertebrates to fish, and from frogs to primates, and now also includes plants and artificial forms of "life." The study of behaviour remains vibrant and continues to attract young, talented scientists, who will find Behaviour a journal with a quick turnaround time (we strive for initial reviews within two months), read by a wide range of researchers.
Historical note: Behaviour was founded by Nobel Prize winner Niko Tinbergen together with W. H. Thorpe, in 1948. In a classical 1963 paper—dedicated to the 60th birthday of that other animal behaviour Nobelist, Konrad Lorenz—Tinbergen proposed that questions relating to why an animal behaves in a particular way can be viewed through four prisms. At the proximate level, we have 1) the causation of behaviour (its underlying motivation, cognition, and emotions), and 2) the behaviour's ontogeny, such as how it develops or is acquired. At the ultimate level, we have 3) the behaviour’s survival value, and 4) its evolution and phylogeny. Behaviour seeks to cover all four prisms equally.
The editorial board of Behaviour wishes to state unequivocally that it is not our policy to influence the Impact Factor in any way that could be regarded unethical.

The Journal ‘Plant-Arthropod-Microbe Interactions’ covers the multidirectional three-way interactions between plants, microbes and arthropods (PMA) from the molecular to the community level. It publishes contributions that enhance our understanding of the impacts of PMA interactions on the physiology, ecology and evolution of the species involved and the consequences for their associated communities and ecosystems, as well as the mechanisms underlying these interactions, and their potential for utilisation in sustainable agriculture and horticulture.
The journal covers impacts of plant-associated microbes including phytopathogens (viruses, bacteria, fungi, oomycetes, nematodes) and phytosymbionts (e.g. mycorrhizae, rhizobia, plant growth promoting rhizobacteria and fungi, endophytes) on plant-associated arthropods such as pollinators and herbivorous or disease-vectoring arthropods and their natural enemies, and vice versa. Likewise, it covers the impacts of arthropod-associated microbes including entomopathogens, baculoviruses and nutritional or defensive endosymbionts on plant-arthropod and plant-microbe interactions, and vice versa.
The scope of the journal encompasses both studies focusing on individual species and studies addressing impacts of/on whole communities, including plant, rhizosphere or arthropod microbiomes. Innovative contributions that address the multitude of PMA interactions in natural or food-production systems, the impact of abiotic environmental factors modulating these interactions, their underlying molecular and ecological mechanisms, and their ecological and evolutionary consequences are welcomed.
