As of 2021, Brill Research Perspectives in Critical Theory is no longer published as a journal by Brill, but will continue as a book series. Brill Research Perspectives in Critical Theory offers a comprehensive reference resource for scholars and students working in the areas of philosophy, critical theory, aesthetics, cultural and literary theory, political and social theory. The journal provides in-depth scholarly articles on the main issues and figures in critical theory understood in its broadest terms. This includes the long historical legacy of critique from Rousseau, Kant, the Romantics, Hegel and Marx, through to Western Marxism and the Frankfurt School, as well as contemporary French Critical Theory, Feminist and Critical Race Theory.
The articles within the journal also examine important intersections between critical and political theory, aesthetics, cultural and literary theory. The resource covers and explains the most central terms and approaches to critical theory as well as important intellectual movements and influences. Each issue is fully peer-reviewed and referenced and provides the most up-to-date research in the area. Comparative Political Theory aims to become the premier academic journal dedicated to fostering dialogue among intellectual traditions from across the globe to address vexing social and political problems.
The academic discipline of political theory largely formed in English-speaking countries in the twentieth century. Political theorists such as John Rawls, Leo Strauss, Isaiah Berlin, and Hannah Arendt, as well as the main authors that they read, became the canon. Political theorists sometimes read authors from China, India, Russia, Mexico, Ghana, Turkey, and elsewhere, but the discipline has been Euro-American-centric.
This journal aims to address this imbalance. One way is to publish work on important authors, texts, arguments, schools, and traditions from around the world. A second way is to publish work that fosters conversations between social and political theorists within and outside of the West. In both cases, authors should explain how the work addresses pressing global problems.
Comparative Political Theory welcomes submissions from around the world that use diverse methodologies, that situate their arguments in different traditions, that can be more theoretical or more empirical, and so forth. The main objective is to shed new light on social and political affairs.
Comparative Political Theory welcomes the following types of submissions:
• Research articles (maximum of 9,000 words, though exceptions may be made);
• Review essays (maximum of 4,000 words);
• Single-book reviews (maximum of 2,000 words)

Journal of Human-Animal Studies

Society & Animals publishes studies that describe and analyze our experiences of non-human animals from the perspective of various disciplines within both the social sciences (e.g., psychology, sociology, anthropology, political science) and humanities (e.g., history, literary criticism). The journal specifically deals with subjects such as human-animal interactions in various settings (animal cruelty, the therapeutic uses of animals), the applied uses of animals (research, education, medicine and agriculture), the use of animals in popular culture (e.g. dog-fighting, circus, animal companion, animal research), attitudes toward animals as affected by different socializing agencies and strategies, representations of animals in literature, the history of the domestication of animals, the politics of animal welfare, and the constitution of the animal rights movement.
The goal of the journal is to stimulate and support the emerging multi-disciplinary field of animal studies, which consists, broadly, of investigations of the ways in which non-human animals figure in our lives. Although emphasizing empirically based studies, the journal also publishes theoretical analyses, literature reviews, methodological contributions, and comments on relevant topics. The editorial board consists of over thirty scholars, professionals (e.g. animal assisted therapists, shelter, zoo, wildlife personnel and etc.), policy makers, and animal advocates.
The Society & Animals is unique in the breadth of subjects covered, methods of papers published, and diversity of scholarly disciplines represented. It is also unique in its encouragement of data-based discussion of ethical and policy issues in the current debate over the place of non-human animals in an increasingly human-centered world.
Although the editorial board and publisher are committed to publishing accepted individual articles online in advance as soon as possible, due to the high volume of submissions received in recent years, there will be a delay in publishing articles in forthcoming issues. However, accepted individual articles are published online in an expedited manner and can be treated as published articles. We thank you for your patience.
