Am Beginn der europäischen Klassengesellschaften steht ein ›Klassenkampf‹ – noch kein Kampf zwischen den Klassen, sondern ein Kampf um die Klassifizierung, um die Durchsetzung des klassifikatorischen Prinzips als neuem Einteilungsmodus von Gesellschaft.
»Class Trouble« nähert sich diesem Kampf um die Neuaufteilung des Sozialen aus einer medienhistorischen Perspektive. Das Buch beschreibt, wie der Imperativ der Klassenteilung im England des 17. Jahrhunderts in die politischen Debatten eindringt, durch welche politischen Technologien er auf das gesellschaftliche Feld ausgreift und wie er in den Massenmedien um 1700 (Kaffeehaus, Club, Presse) als geschmäcklerisches »Classing« populäre Zustimmung gewinnt. Prozesse des Kopierens, Vervielfältigens und Nachäffens spielen hier eine besondere Rolle: In der Entstehung von Klassengesellschaft sind Erfindung und Nachahmung eng verschwistert.

In Censorship in Colonial Indonesia, 1901–1942 Nobuto Yamamoto examines the institutionalization of censorship and its symbiosis with print culture in the former Dutch colony. Born from the liberal desire to promote the well-being of the colonial population, censorship was not practiced exclusively in repressive ways but manifested in constructive policies and stimuli, among which was the cultivation of the “native press” under state patronage. Censorship in the Indies oscillated between liberal impulse and the intrinsic insecurity of a colonial state in the era of nationalism and democratic governance. It proved unpredictable in terms of outcomes, at times being co-opted by resourceful activists and journalists, and susceptible to international politics as it transformed during the Sino-Japanese war of the 1930s.

Moving Frontiers, Shifting Identities in the Land of Rome (13th-15th Centuries) focuses on the perceptions of geopolitical and cultural change, which was triggered by the arrival of Turkish Muslim groups into the territories of the Byzantine Empire at the end of the eleventh century, through intersecting stories transmitted in Turkish Muslim warrior epics and dervish vitas, and late Byzantine martyria. It examines the Byzantines’ encounters with the newcomers in a shared story-world, here called “land of Rome,” as well as its perception, changing geopolitical and cultural frontiers, and in relation to these changes, the shifts in identity of the people inhabiting this space. The study highlights the complex relationship between the character of specific places and the cultural identities of the people who inhabited them.
