Les philosophes de l’Antiquité ont fait de la vertu le cœur de leurs théories éthiques et politiques. Les philosophes face au vice, de Socrate à Augustin jette une lumière nouvelle sur ces théories en explorant comment les principaux philosophes de l’Antiquité (Socrate, Platon, Aristote, Plotin, Augustin) et les principales écoles philosophiques (épicuriens et stoïciens) se sont attachés à tracer une cartographie de cet envers de la vertu qu’est le vice, à examiner ses causes et ses puissances, à détailler les moyens de s’en défaire, et parfois même, d’en faire usage, pour avancer sur le chemin de la vertu. Le volume rassemble 15 contributions originales en anglais, français et italien, écrites par des spécialistes renommés de l’histoire de la philosophie antique et des études classiques.

Trans-national Perspectives on Access, Equity, and Internationalization

Die bewegte Biographie des Paderborner Erzbischofs Lorenz Kardinal Jaeger (1892–1975) wird unter Verwendung seines neu erschlossenen Nachlasses in einem interdisziplinären Forschungsprojekt anhand von Themenschwerpunkten erarbeitet.
Seit seinem Amtsantritt als Erzbischof in Paderborn engagierte sich Jaeger für die Ökumene. Damit gehörte er zu den katholischen Pionieren auf diesem Gebiet. Welches Verständnis er von Ökumene hatte, wie sich sein Engagement veränderte, wie sich dieses auf diözesaner, nationaler und internationaler Seite entwickelte, zeigen die Beiträge im zweiten Band des Forschungsprojektes. Jaeger spielte eine wichtige Rolle für die Entstehung des Sekretariats der Einheit. Für seine Verdienste auf diesem Gebiet wurde ihm die Kardinalswürde verliehen.

Die Steinkohle gilt als das „Schwarze Gold“ der deutschen Industrialisierung. Das Buch zeigt, wie sich die Wahrnehmung und Bedeutung dieses Rohstoffs begleitet vom wirtschaftlichen und technologischen Wandel dieser Zeit veränderte.
Was ist Steinkohle? Woraus besteht sie und woher kommt sie? Welche Vorteile hat sie und warum? Wozu war sie zu gebrauchen und wozu nicht? Fragen wie diese rückten im 19. Jahrhundert zunehmend in das Blickfeld von WissenschaftlerInnen und Bergbautreibenden. Anlass waren der steigende wirtschaftliche Wert der Steinkohle, die zunehmende Notwendigkeit einer sicheren Versorgung aber auch die flächendeckende Nutzung der Steinkohle. Dennoch ist bisher wenig darüber bekannt, wie die Zeitgenossen der Industrialisierung die Materialität dieses Rohstoff betrachteten. Dieses Buch blickt hinter die Kulissen der Industrialisierung und macht mit der Steinkohle einen ihrer zentralen und bedeutendsten Rohstoffe zur Akteurin der Geschichte.
This book is the first comprehensive work on oriental Notodontidae (Lepidoptera) outside mainland Asia. The studied area includes also Borneo Island, the Malayan Peninsula, entire New Guinea with adjacent islands. All species are illustrated in both sexes with a total number of 1272 specimens on 51 colour plates. Genitalia photos of both sexes as well as detailed distribution maps are provided for each species.
The book deals in the first volume with 298 species and contains descriptions of 99 new notodontid taxa. A second volume will treat with the remaining 160 species and include also a comprehensive biogeographic analysis.
Pre-modern long-distance trade was fraught with risks which often created conflicts of interest. The ensuing disputes and the ways the actors involved dealt with them belong to the field of conflict management. How did victims of maritime conflicts claim compensation? How did individual actors and public institutions negotiate disputes which transcended jurisdictional boundaries? What strategies, arrangements and agreements could contribute to achieve the resolution of such conflicts, and to what effect? These and other questions have mainly been studied separately for the Mediterranean and Atlantic regions. Here, the two seascapes are connected, allowing for a comparative long-term perspective. The different contributions enhance our understanding in the complexity of various approaches to conflict management.

Inclusion as Social Justice: Theory and Practice in African Higher Education discusses the extent to which education enables equitable social access for diverse student populations in the context of historical sidelining of indigenous knowledge systems and epistemic injustice of colonial epistemologies in Africa. The goal is to theoretically unpack the social differentials and micro-inequities that practically disempower diverse students in African higher education. To this end, the book features aspects of diversity such as gender, rurality, refugee status and disability in general, with hearing and visual impairment as prime illustrations. It is argued that despite the ethically defensible and socially just policy and structural interventions for transforming higher education meant to redress the legacy of colonial injustices, urban universities present epistemological equity challenges for students from rural communities. Similarly, the opaque fate of students displaced from their home countries and currently studying in universities in host countries is analyzed. The book illustrates the access case for gender and disability in higher education using empirical studies and examples from Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. Challenges facing students in higher education in these countries and the strategies the students devise to succeed in the institutions are analyzed.
