Mit der osmanischen Besetzung 1541 nahm die Geschichte der ungarischen Hauptstadt und königlichen Residenz Buda (Ofen) ein tragisches Ende. Die Rückeroberung war von den Habsburgern seit langem geplant, doch erst 1686 konnten die christlichen Heere die Stadt befreien. Gleich danach wanderten Menschen in die Stadt ein. Als Folge der Ansiedlung von katholischen Deutschen konzentrierte sich die politische Macht hauptsächlich in den Händen der deutschen Bewohner, doch die Stadt wurde dennoch als ein multiethnischer und multireligiöser Ort wiedergeboren. Dieses Buch ist kein stadtgeschichtliches Werk im klassischen Sinne, denn Eleonóra Géra nähert sich der Epoche nicht aus der Perspektive der öffentlichen Verwaltung, sondern stellt aus einer mikrohistorischen Perspektive ihre Kulturgeschichte vor.

In Italy, anti-Protestantism became a relevant motif of reactionary polemics during the Risorgimento and the post-unification period in the 19th century. Attenuated around 1900, the anti-Protestant offensive resumed after the First World War. Between the early 1920s and the mid-1950s, the hostility of the Catholic Church towards the Protestant presence and mission in Italy became a significant social and political phenomenon. It succeeded in influencing the attitude of the Italian state and the legislation on religious freedom itself. Reconstructing Catholic anti-Protestantism, Paolo Zanini shows that the attitude towards Protestant denominations was one of the features of continuity between Fascism and the first decade of the post-war Republic.

Martin Papenheim legt mit seinem Buch über die Neo-Sannyasins die erste umfassende Geschichte der Bhagwan-Bewegung in Deutschland vor, die als wohl bedeutendste neureligiöse Strömung der Bonner Republik gelten kann. Der Ashram des indischen Guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (später bekannt als Osho) in Poona und die Stadt Rajneeshpuram in Oregon (USA) entwickelten sich zu in der gesamten westlichen Welt beachteten Meditations- und Therapiezentren. In Deutschland erreichte die Bewegung um 1980 ihren spektakulären Höhepunkt mit etwa 30.000 Neo-Sannyasins, rund einem Drittel der weltweiten Anhängerschaft, von denen 400 in eigenen Kommunen lebten. Keine andere religiöse Bewegung provozierte ein derart großes Medienecho und so intensive öffentliche Auseinandersetzungen wie die Anhänger Bhagwans. Obwohl die Organisation mittlerweile weitgehend zerfallen ist, hat sie in der deutschen Kultur bleibende Spuren hinterlassen. Die Darstellung stützt sich auf umfassendes, bisher kaum beachtetes Quellenmaterial und Schilderungen von Zeitzeugen, so dass sich zahlreiche neue Perspektiven auf die Thematik eröffnen.

The proposed book series will publish cutting-edge research on the Anthropocene with a dual focus on both Africa and Asia, as well as the complex relations connecting these two continents, and the oceans between them. It will showcase fresh and original studies of the Anthropocene – theories, methods and practices – across the environmental humanities and social sciences. This will include anthropology, art, cinema and theater, comparative literature, cultural studies, ecology, geology, history, law, linguistics, media studies, political science, religion and sociology under the broad heading of ‘environmental humanities’. Possible topics include, but are not limited to, the Chinese Belt and Road initiative, bio-politics, climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, ecofeminism, eco-criticism, ecological problems and policies, energy issues, environmental transformation, oceanic and maritime studies, anthro-zoology and multi-species entanglements, neo-colonialism and post-coloniality, development issues and ‘wicked problems’ in and from the Global South. This English-language book series is directed at scholars, graduate and undergraduate students of Anthropocene studies related to Africa and Asia.
