The central argument in this book revolves around the significance of an African philosophy of higher education. Such a philosophy of higher education is geared towards cultivating democratic iterations, co-belonging, and critique within human encounters. Together, these actions can enhance intellectual activism within and beyond the encounters. A philosophy of higher education is constituted by a philosophical act of reflexivity according to which (how), freedom (both autonomous and communal), cosmopolitanism (learning to live with differences and otherness), and caring with others (ubuntu) can be rhythmically practised. What makes an African philosophy of higher education distinctive and realisable is that practices ought to be based on iterations, co-belonging, and critique. If intellectual activism were not to become a major act of resistance on the basis of which educational, political, and societal dystopias can be undermined, such a philosophy of higher education would not have a real purpose. An African philosophy of higher education is an intellectually activist endeavour because of its concern to be oppositional to constraints in and about higher education. In conversation with such an understanding of African philosophy of higher education, contributors to this volume offer responses to why human freedom, cosmopolitanism, and caring with others (ubuntu) can be rhythmically enacted.

Twenty-first century processes, such as globalization and digitization, pose various challenges for primary, secondary, and post-secondary teacher education at both the formal and informal education levels. These challenges are addressed by innovators in the field of teacher education, i.e. teacher educators, pre-service teachers, in-service teachers, scholars and policy-makers. This edited volume explores future trends in three different spheres of teacher education: 1) pedagogies (emotive, reflective, cognitive, and didactic practices), 2) technologies (digital competencies, artificial intelligence in teaching, and the transformative potential of digital tools in intercultural learning), and 3) societies (multilingualism, attitudes towards literacies, societal polarization, and teacher shortages). The suggested innovations aim to bridge the gap between theory and practice by drawing upon the critical evaluation of theoretical approaches as well as the discussion of best practice examples. The chapters are situated in various countries, such as Vietnam, Canada, Argentina, Spain, Germany, the USA, Switzerland, Sweden, Italy, and, as a transnational cooperation, Palestine and the UK. The Future of Teacher Education: Innovations across Pedagogies, Technologies and Societies considers various models of teacher education (e.g. reflective model, competency-based model, etc.) and applies a multitude of different research methods (e.g. didactic analysis of teaching material, thematic analysis of reflections, etc.).

In their theological and historical interactions, neo-Calvinism and Roman Catholicism have often met in moments of conflict and co-operation. The neo-Calvinist statesman Abraham Kuyper polemicized against the Roman Catholic Church and its theology, whilst building bridges between those traditions by forging novel political coalitions across ecclesiastical boundaries. In theology, Gerrit C. Berkouwer, a neo-Calvinist critic of Roman Catholicism in the 1930s, later attended the Second Vatican Council as an appreciative Protestant observer. Vulnerability is at the core of the political drama of our time. Countering conventional approaches, this book presents human vulnerability as a source of political community and a potential for political agency in precarity. From basic science to practical applications in human and veterinary medicine and nutrition
For the last 30 years, polyphenols were in the centre of research work worldwide. Silymarin, an extract from a medicinal plant Silybum marianum, also known as milk thistle, has a special place in this group, having been used in human medicine for the management of liver diseases since ancient times. Accumulating scientific evidence indicates that silymarin is characterised by a wide range of protective pharmacological activities and this topic has received tremendous attention in recent years. However, until now there has been no single monograph addressing major questions related to silymarin chemistry, biochemistry and practical applications.
The goal of this book is to provide up to date information about silymarin chemistry, biochemistry and molecular mechanisms of protective actions of this phytochemical with a special emphasis to its vitagene- and transcription factor-modulating properties. Silymarin applications in human diseases, including hepatoprotection, neuroprotection, anti-diabetic, anti-arthritis and other protective activities are reviewed. Immunomodulating, anti-inflammatory, anti-toxic protective activities of silymarin are characterised in detail. Practical applications of silymarin in poultry and animal industry with a special emphasis on its protective roles in gut health maintenance are also presented.

Auf Anfrage des karthagischen Diakons Quodvultdeus verfasst Augustin in den Jahren vor seinem Tod einen Häretikerkatalog, in dem er insgesamt 88 Gruppierungen unter dem Oberbegriff der Häresie klassifiziert und beschreibt. Die vorliegende Monographie liefert einen fortlaufenden, detaillierten Kommentar dieses bislang wenig bearbeiteten häresiographischen Kompendiums. Die Analyse wird geleitet von der Frage nach Augustins literarischen Quellen (Ps.-Epiphanius, Filastrius, Ps.-Hieronymus u.a.) sowie nach seinem eigenständigen Beitrag in der Verarbeitung des Quellenmaterials. Genuin augustinische Strategien der Häresiographie werden so herausgearbeitet. Dabei rückt verstärkt Augustins spezifische Kenntnis der jeweiligen Gruppierungen vor dem Hintergrund seines eigenen antihäretischen Engagements und seines Gesamtwerks in den Blick. Somit wirft die Untersuchung zugleich ein Schlaglicht auf so gut wie alle Kontroversen, in denen Augustin zeitlebens stand.
