This volume brings together contributions that, from different disciplinary perspectives, highlight certain aspects and problems related to the configuration of the relationship between the religious and the secular in Japan. In the background stands the question of the historical path dependencies that lead to the formation of a specifically Japanese secularity. Based on the assumption that existing epistemic and social structures shape the way in which Western concepts of secularism were appropriated, the individual case studies demonstrate that the culturally specific appropriation of Western regulatory principles such as secularism has created problems that are of political relevance in contemporary Japan.

Die Wortgeschichte von „Weltanschauung“ ist kurz: Zwischen seinem ersten, eher beiläufigen Auftauchen bei Kant 1790, subjektivierenden Aufladungen in der Romantik und den inflationären Ideologisierungen und Politisierungen von „Weltanschauung“ im späten 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert liegen nur 150 Jahre. Besonders sein Missbrauch durch NS-Ideologen hat das Wort in Verruf gebracht, es lebt aber u.a. im juristischen Sprachgebrauch fort und erlebt in der gegenwärtigen Religionskritik wieder etwas Konjunktur: Dort wird z.T. wieder eine naturalistische „wissenschaftliche Weltanschauung“ in Aussicht gestellt. Als philosophisches Analysewerkzeug hat das Wort aber Potenzial: „Weltanschauung“ könnte nicht nur für religiös-politische Bewertungen stehen, sondern auch für jenes implizite theoretische Koordinatensystem, das jeden Menschen in seinem Verstehen, Denken und Handeln leitet.

Culture and personality are deeply related. Gerard Saucier articulates their interface, and new insights regarding the psychology of religion and spirituality. Rather than making assumptions of cultural homogeneity that promote stereotyping, Gerard Saucier applies a distributive model of culture which assumes heterogeneity, linking the otherwise separate compartments of culture and personality. Personality variation maps cultural non-uniformity, but variation in mindset (attitudes, beliefs, values) does so more directly. Studies of isms concepts embedded in natural language demonstrate that matters of religion and spirituality make up a substantial fraction of culture-relevant mindset, and empirical evidence shows these have a large effect-size contribution to cultural differences between nations around the globe. Die Jungfrau Ursula erlebte mit ihren Gefährtinnen zwischen der Spätantike und der Frühen Neuzeit einen beispiellosen Aufstieg, beginnend mit der Erwähnung auf einer vermutlich karolingischen Inschrift in Köln bis hin zu einem über ganz Europa verbreiteten Kult. Gegenstand dieses Buches ist die Übertragung der Reliquien der heiligen Kölner Jungfrauen durch das Netzwerk der Benediktiner und Zisterzienserklöster und der daraus resultierende Aufschwung des Kultes, insbesondere durch die Schaffung spezifischer Offiziumszyklen.

How the Education System Reacted to the First Wave of Covid-19
The nine chapters in this book explore how the Italian education system responded to distance learning during the first wave of the pandemic. The impact of the hard lockdown on both teaching and learning revealed the inherent weaknesses of a system in which digital technology had only recently been introduced and highlighted the relevant inequalities in their access and use. While students, teachers and families adapted (albeit with difficulty) to the new learning and teaching routines, the institutions faced the challenge of ensuring quality and equality.

By including various case studies and unedited sets of data collected in different areas of the country, the book offers up-to-date insights on the impact of the pandemic on the Italian school system and provides a broad introduction to the educational emergency from a sociological perspective. The volume ends with a post-commentary comparing the Italian case with the similar situation of school closure as it occurred in the United Kingdom.
