In 2017, a book was published entitled ‘Insects as food and feed: from production to consumption’ (Van Huis and Tomberlin, 2017). However, the sector of insects as food and feed is developing so quickly that an update seems appropriate. This book ‘Advancement of insects as food and feed in a circular economyy’ is a reprint of the Special Isse in Open Access in the Journal of Insects as Food and Feed. All chapters dealt with relevant topics related to insects as food and feed, and most of the content of the articles is different from the 2017 book, reflecting developments in the field.
Interactions between society, biodiversity and water in a humid tropical forest
This book examines interactions between human communities and the global biodiversity that is sheltered by the Salonga National Park. While not being a review of research that has been on-going in the Salonga National Park over several years now, the book takes a bird-eye perspective to look at how the forests, waters and species that occur in the wider Salonga landscape interact to give birth to what the Salonga National Park is. As such, the book treats of the Salonga’s wildlife, its forests and waters, and the Salonga National Park’s contemporary human history, within the regional framework.
Universal Model of Water Resources Management
The conservation of water resources together with environment protection will be a challenge for the European Union within the 21st century. Water management nowadays involves the cooperation of farmers, societies, industry and public administration. The solution based model of water protection in this book describes the creation of local water partnerships by local actors and stakeholders for the management of local water resources. These local water partnerships will enable the integration of the local community to comprehensively solve problems related to water security, while also cooperating with neighbouring partnerships. The local water strategy is based on local needs and priorities with reference to regional, national and global objectives. This strategy also provides for environment and species protection, as envisioned by the New Green Deal and the current EU actions to make the key economic sectors more resistant to climate change. The model for water protection can also be used to reduce the carbon footprint and environmental transformation within Europe.

Optimal gut health is of vital importance to the performance of production animals (fish, poultry, swine, cattle). Gut health is key to making the productivity, well-being and sustainability of animal production more efficient. Directly and indirectly, the environment is a powerful regulator of gastrointestinal physiology that decisively influences the functional state of the animal. Production animals reared under conventional conditions of intensive production are subjected to various exogenous and endogenous sources of environmental factors that can impact gut health. Exogenous factors are environmental stressors derived from external sources connected with diet, infectious disease, mycotoxin exposure, climate (heat and cold), management practices, biosecurity level, housing, litter, feed access, quality, and components. Endogenous factors are host-related such as age, sex, genetics, and breed or are made within the host’s body, such as hormones and neurotransmitters, in response to a stimulus, stressor, or trigger. Endogenous factors serve to communicate signals both locally and distantly in the body. Understanding the interactions between the diverse environmental factors and the different physiological characteristics of the gastrointestinal tract allows us to advance the understanding of gut health and the ability to regulate animal production. The spirit of this book is to critically address how the interactions of different environmental stressors, both internal and external, influence the various functions of the gastrointestinal system of production animals and to be able to use the information to advance scientific research as well as improve the use of the productive tools available.

Selenium (Se) is an essential dietary trace element participating in the regulation of various physiological functions in humans and farm animals through its incorporation into a range of selenoproteins. Low Se content in main feed ingredients is a common problem worldwide and dietary Se supplementation is a current practice in ruminant nutrition. Recent research clearly proved that sodium selenite, used for the last 50 years as a feed supplement, is not an optimal form of Se. However, use of organic selenium in dairy and beef diets can help meet Se requirement and maintain health/high immunocompetence, productive and reproductive performance.

The goal of this book is to provide up-to-date information about the roles of Se in ruminant nutrition and health. A special emphasis is given to the role of selenium as an essential part of the integrated antioxidant system. The concept of using organic Se in ruminant nutrition is described in detail with emphasis on selenomethionine as a storage form of Se in the body. Also, specific Se deficiency-related disorders in ruminants are described and the importance of Se in growth, development, immunity and reproduction is demonstrated. Molecular mechanisms of protective effects of Se under stressful conditions of commercial milk and meat production are characterized.

This book will be of practical importance to dairy and beef producers, to nutritionists and vets as well as for animal scientists, students of agricultural colleges and universities. It will also be of interest for researchers in areas related to environmental sciences, food sciences, physiology, etc.

Abstract

Bovine mastitis (BM) is a major disease in dairy industry. The current approaches – mainly antibiotic treatments – are not entirely effective and may contribute to antimicrobial resistance dissemination, rising the need for alternative treatment. The present study aims to evaluate the impact of post-milking application of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei CIRM BIA 1542 (Lp1542) on the teat skin (TS) of 20 Holstein cows in mid lactation, in order to reinforce the barrier effect of the microbiota naturally present on the teat. Treatment (Lp1542, iodine or no treatment) was applied post-milking twice a day on the 4 teats of healthy animals for 15 days. Blood and milk samples, and TS swabs were collected at day (D)1, D8, D15 and D26 before morning milking and at D15 before evening milking (D15E) to evaluate Lp1542 impact at the microbial, immune and physiological levels. Lp1542 treatment resulted in a higher lactic acid bacteria and total microbial populations on TS and in foremilk (FM) at D15(E) compared with iodine treatment. Metabarcoding analysis revealed changes in the composition of TS and FM microbiota, beyond a higher Lacticaseibacillus abundance. This included a higher abundance of Actinobacteriota, including Bifidobacterium, and a lower abundance of Pseudomonadota on TS of Lp1542 compared with iodine-treated quarters. In addition, Lp1542 treatment did not trigger any major inflammatory response in the mammary gland, except interleukin 8 production and expression which tended to be slightly higher in Lp1542-treated cows compared with the others. Finally, Lp1542 treatment had no impact on the mammary epithelium functionality (milk yield and composition) and integrity (epithelial cell exfoliation into milk and milk Na+/K+ ratio). Altogether, these results indicate that a topical treatment with Lp1542 is safe with regard to mammary gland physiology and immune system, while impacting its microbiota, inviting us to further explore its effectiveness for mastitis prevention.

Abstract

While voluntary responsible business standards are more flexible than regulation and thus more responsive to changes in society, revising standards can have negative effects on compliance rates. We hypothesize that when non-compliance is visible to external stakeholders and participating firms receive a clear signal that their products are non-compliant, the firms will respond by re-certifying their products, which will raise their certification rates. We tested our hypothesis by conducting a multi-level regression on the certification rates before and after the revision of a voluntary label for healthier food products, active in the Dutch market from 2006 until 2015 in the Dutch market (76 firms, 22 product categories, 1354 firm-category-year observations). Our results show the opposite effect than hypothesized: after standards’ revision, firms with decertified products significantly decrease their certification rates compared to firms without decertified products. We conclude that making standards stricter over time is not always a successful strategy to maintain compliance. We argue that this decrease in compliance after standards’ revisions can be explained by the low behavioural visibility of non-compliance, restricting stakeholder pressure both at the product level by consumers as well as at the firm level by other stakeholders.

Abstract

This study investigates the influence of digital financial inclusion on green total factor productivity of grain in China, using data from 30 provinces (excluding Tibet) from 2011 to 2020. Our findings reveal a dual role of digital finance: it significantly enhances green productivity of grain in central and eastern China but has a contrasting effect in the western regions. The research also uncovers a unique pattern where the benefits of digital finance in one area can negatively affect nearby regions. This research contributes significantly to the discourse on finance and agriculture, providing nuanced perspectives on the regional implications of digital financial inclusion for grain productivity, and thereby enriching the understanding of its role in agrarian economies.
