Abstract
In this paper, an attempt is made to investigate the impact of World War II on antiquities in Attica, Greece. The research is based on a combined study of Greek archival material, which documents the measures taken by the Greek state to protect antiquities, the active opposition of the struggling Greek Archaeological Service to the occupation forces and the compulsory cooperation with the “Art Protection” units of Germany and Italy, as well as the cultural policies of the opponents in occupied Greece.
Abstract
During the Second World War, cultural heritage suffered severe losses, triggering an academic debate on reconstruction that, starting from the examples of the restoration charters of the 1930s, had to deal with the emergency of post-war recovery. Because of their strategic function, bridges proved to be among the monuments most vulnerable to military attacks, damaging important testimonies of cultural heritage. A case study is the bridge over the Ofanto river near Canosa di Puglia, whose two-thousand-year history was violated by retreating German troops who blew up its central arches in 1943. This episode, which until now has only been briefly mentioned in the sources, has been analyzed in detail thanks to research in European and American photographic archives, making it possible to shed light on the wartime events surrounding the bridge and on different aspects of its reconstruction, comparing it with other examples in its local and Italian contexts.
