Abstract

This chapter outlines how baptism was the initiation ritual of early Christians that is both similar and opposed to Jewish circumcision and the baptism of John. This underlines the significance of baptism for the early believers and how undergoing the experience of baptism altered their lives, which ultimately allowed phrases like “in Christ” to interpret this new existence.
