Sufism through the Eyes of ʿImād al-Dīn Aḥmad al-Wāsiṭī (d. 711/1311)

The Journeys of a Taymiyyan Sufi explores the life and teachings of ʿImād al-Dīn Aḥmad al-Wāsiṭī (d. 711/1311), a little-known Ḥanbalī Sufi master from the circle of Ibn Taymiyya (d. 728/1328). The first part of this book follows al-Wāsiṭī’s physical journey in search of spiritual guidance through a critical study of his autobiographical writings. This provides unique insights into the Rifāʿiyya, the Shādhiliyya, and the school of Ibn ʿArabī, several manifestations of Sufism that he encountered as he travelled from Wāsiṭ to Baghdad, Alexandria, and Cairo. Part I closes with his final destination, Damascus, where his membership of Ibn Taymiyya’s circle and his role as a Sufi teacher is closely examined.

The second part focuses on al-Wāsiṭī’s spiritual journey through a study of his Sufi writings, which convey the distinct type of traditionalist Sufism that he taught in early eighth/fourteenth-century Damascus. Besides providing an overview of the spiritual path unto God from beginning to end as he formulated it, this reveals an exceptional interplay between Sufi theory and traditionalist theology.

In Praise of the Few: Studies in Shiʿi Thought and History is a selection of Etan Kohlberg’s research on Shiʿi Islam over a period of fifty years. It includes previously published articles, revised dissertation chapters, and a full bibliography of the author’s work. Divided into two parts, the collection begins with chapters from Kohlberg’s Oxford doctoral dissertation (1971) and related articles that investigate Sunni and Shiʿi views on the Prophet’s Companions and debates concerning the extent of their authority as sources of religious knowledge. Part Two traces the doctrinal and historical developments pertaining to various dimensions of Imāmī Shiʿi intellectual tradition such as theology, hadith, law, jurisprudence, and exegesis.

Résumé

Dans le Coran tel qu’on le connaît aujourd’hui, il n’est pas fait mention explicite de quelques doctrines fondamentales du shiʿisme. Cela peut expliquer le rôle central joué non seulement par l’exégèse et la tradition shiʿites, mais aussi par d’autres textes sacrés. Il s’agit ou bien de textes révélés aux prophètes pré-islamiques, et étant arrivés aux Imāms par Muḥammad, ou bien de textes révélés seulement au Prophète et aux membres de sa famille. Leur fonction principale est bien sûr de souligner les connaissances illimitées des Imāms, mais aussi de montrer l’existence de différentes Écritures, d’une stature proche de celle du Coran, et soutenant les doctrines shiʿites. Ces textes se trouvent à présent en possession de l’Imām caché; au moment de sa réapparition comme mahdī, ils seront révélés à tous et, avec les autres Écritures, constitueront la preuve ultime de la validité de la croyance shiʿite.
