In this book, Marileen La Haije offers a thorough and innovative analysis of the intersections between madness and trauma in recent Central American literature on (post)war. A central argument of her study is that these literary texts challenge the taboo of madness in Latin American contexts of memory, by showing that talking about madness does not necessarily lead to stigmatizing victims of political violence or disqualifying their stories about traumatic experiences. La Haije highlights the importance of including madness on the research agenda in the field of memory studies in Latin America.

En este libro, Marileen La Haije presenta un análisis detallado e innovador de las intersecciones entre locura y trauma en la ficción centroamericana reciente sobre la (pos)guerra. Un argumento central de su estudio es que estos textos literarios desafían el tabú de la locura en los contextos de memoria latinoamericanos, enseñándonos que hablar de locura no necesariamente implica estigmatizar a víctimas de violencia política o descalificar sus relatos sobre experiencias traumáticas. La Haije destaca la importancia de incluir la locura como tema de investigación en los estudios sobre la memoria en Latinoamérica.
La vida de la beata Juana de Jesús (1662-1703)
La construcción de la santidad en la región andina. Resumen breve de la vida de la beata Juana de Jesús (1662-1703) es una edición comentada de la hagiografía de Juana de Jesús escrita por su confesor, Antonio Fernández Sierra durante la primera década del siglo XVIII. Este manuscrito, abandonado durante mucho tiempo en los archivos de Quito, fue muy popular entre los intelectuales del siglo XVIII e incluso sirvió de base para otras dos hagiografías, ambas escritas aproximadamente cincuenta años después. Este estudio de una de las primeras hagiografías escritas en la periferia del imperio español en América del Sur, revela la compleja relación entre los discursos religiosos y protonacionalistas que tuvieron lugar en el Quito colonial.

La construcción de la santidad en la región andina. Resumen breve de la vida de la beata Juana de Jesús (1662-1703) is an annotated edition of the hagiography of Juana de Jesús written by her confessor, Antonio Fernández Sierra, during the first decade of the eighteenth century. Long abandoned in the archives in Quito, this manuscript was well known to eighteenth century intellectuals and served as the basis for two other hagiographies, both written approximately fifty years later. One of the first hagiographies from the periphery of the Spanish empire in South America, this volume allows the contemporary reader to trace the complex interweaving of religious and proto-nationalist discourses that emerged in colonial Quito.

Insights into Latinx Identity in the Twenty-First Century
In Latinidad at the Crossroad: Insights into Latinx identity in the Twenty-First Century Gerke and González Rodríguez provide flashing glimpses into the ways in which Latinas/os struggle to forge their multiracial and multicultural identities within their own communities and in mainstream U.S. society. This volume encompasses an interdisciplinary perspective on the complex range of latinidades that confronts stereotypical connotations, and simultaneously advocates a more flexible (re)definition that may overcome static collective representations of identity, ethnicity and belonging. Well-positioned in the current political context, the notion of latinidad is examined as a complex sociological phenomenon of identity-construction which is affected by outside influences and is used as a powerful linguistic, cultural and ideological weapon to denounce oppression and deconstruct stereotypes. Including chapters from foundational and influential scholars, this collection moves towards a dynamic exploration of how Latinx are remapping their identity positions in twenty-first century America.

Based on a multi-year ethnography in one Spanish-speaking community in New Jersey, this book is a meticulous account of six Mexican families that explores the relationship between siblings’ language use patterns, practices, and ideologies. Combining insights gained from language socialization and heritage language studies within the larger field of sociolinguistics, the book’s findings examine siblings’ sociolinguistic environments and the ways in which these Latino children use and view their multilingual resources in the home, school, and broader community. This study emphasizes the links between siblings’ language ideologies, agentive decision making, and linguistic patterns, and the ways in which birth order influences the different dimensions of heritage language maintenance in the U.S..
Music as Theology in the Spanish Empire
Hearing Faith explores the ways Roman Catholics in the seventeenth-century Spanish Empire used music to connect faith and hearing. From the Royal Chapel in Madrid to Puebla Cathedral in colonial Mexico, communities celebrated Christmas and other feasts with villancicos, a widespread genre of vernacular poetry and devotional music. A large proportion of villancico texts directly address the nature of hearing and the power of music to connect people to God. By interpreting complex and fascinating examples of “music about music” in the context of contemporary theological writing, the book shows how Spanish Catholics embodied their beliefs about music, through music itself. Listening closely to these previously undiscovered and overlooked archival sources reveals how Spanish subjects listened and why.
The Spatiality of the Hispanic Avant-Garde: Ultraísmo & Estridentismo, 1918-1927 is a thorough exploration of the meanings and values Hispanic poets and artists assigned to four iconic locations of modernity: the city, the cafés, means of transportation, and the sea, during the first decades of the 20th century. El éxodo español de 1939: Una topología cultural del exilio explores the cultural strategies employed by Spanish Republican refugees in adapting to radical changes in their environment and transforming the new spaces into habitable places. Thus the monograph highlights the centrality of the concept of place in the reconstruction of the lost home by analysing the various stages of the relocation of culture in exile: from French internment camps, on board ships, and finally to residence in Mexico.
Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, Jato contends that the experience of space in exile is relational, and that the staging posts described in each chapter have no meaning unless they are interconnected as integral parts of a cultural topology.



En El éxodo español de 1939: Una topología cultural del exilio Mónica Jato da cuenta de las variadas estrategias culturales empleadas por los refugiados republicanos españoles para adaptarse a las condiciones de sus nuevos entornos con el fin de transformarlos en lugares habitables. El libro indaga así la centralidad del concepto de lugar en la reconstrucción del hogar perdido y lo hace a través de sus diferentes etapas: en los campos de internamiento franceses, en los barcos rumbo a América y durante el asentamiento en tierras mexicanas.
La experiencia del exilio es abordada aquí desde una perspectiva interdisciplinaria que pone de manifiesto el aspecto relacional de estas pausas espaciales cuya interconexión define esta particular topología cultural.
