Local Interactions in an Ottoman Countryside (1839-1923)
This book traces the history of everyday relations of Greek-Orthodox Christians and Muslims of Cappadocia, an Ottoman countryside inhabited by various ethno-religious groups, either sharing the same settlements, or living in neighbouring villages. Based on Ottoman state archives, testimonies collected by the Centre of Asia Minor Studies, and various pre-1923 hand-written and printed sources mostly in Ottoman- and Karamanli-Turkish, and Greek, the study covers the period from 1839 to 1923 and proposes an anthropological perspective on everyday cross-religious interactions. It focuses on questions such as identification and mapping of communities, sharing of space and resources, use of languages, and religiosity in the context of conversions and of shared sacred spaces and beliefs to investigate everyday realities of a multireligious rural society which disappeared with the fall of the Empire.

The book’s ten contributors delve into the conflicts between oppressive authorities and the desire for freedom. These questions constitute the basis of investigation and analysis of this unique cross-disciplinary volume. Nach dem Ende des SS-Terrors war das ostwestfälische Dorf Wewelsburg ab Frühjahr 1945 zunächst von Verdrängung und Weiterleben geprägt. Der Band stellt neue Forschungen zur Geschichte des KZ Niederhagen, den Häftlingen und SS-Wachmannschaften vor. Wo wurden die Toten des Konzentrationslagers bestattet und wie erlebten die KZ-Häftlinge am 2. April 1945 ihre Befreiung? Die frühe Jagd der britischen Militärverwaltung nach Kriegsverbrechern wird ebenso beleuchtet wie das von den amerikanischen Soldaten initiierte „Sühnebegräbnis“. Der 1950 eingeweihte Gemäldezyklus von Jo Glahé steht für ein frühes Gedenken in Wewelsburg. Die Weiternutzung des Lagergeländes als Flüchtlingslager und spätere Wohnsiedlung wird ebenso skizziert wie die bauhistorischen Untersuchungen der baulichen Überreste.

Dieses Buch würdigt Robert Schuman (1886-1963), den fast vergessenen „Vater Europas“. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg kämpfte er für eine europäische Zukunft ohne Krieg, Hass, Flucht und Armut. Als französischer Außenminister bereitete er den Weg zur Schaffung eines gemeinsamen europäischen Wirtschaftsraums. Als französischer Ministerpräsident und Präsident des Europäischen Parlaments war er einer der Mitbegründer der Europäischen Union. In Luxemburg geboren und in Lothringen beheimatet, galt Schumans besonderer Einsatz der deutsch-französischen Versöhnung und der internationalen Jugendarbeit, stets getragen von seinem tiefen katholischen Glauben. Manfred Kontz hat erstmals Zeitzeugenberichte und Zeitzeugnisse zum Leben Robert Schumans in einer dokumentarischen Biografie zusammengetragen. Es gilt, einen europäischen Visionär wiederzuentdecken, dessen Handeln im Einklang mit seinen Werten stand, der Versöhnung und Verständnis statt Spaltung und Polemik suchte.
