This book strives to deal with Hegel’s thought by means of a thorough, unitarian and logical approach and to enforce the idea that philosophy is rigorous as far as it is able to consistently tackle the question of self-consciousness. It results that the logic underlying every philosophical interest traces back to the self-referring investigation about life in the mode of self-consciousness, by which social practices and their history can be grasped. Once we assess that self-consciousness is life through the concept, we would be able to realize the logical structure underlying its historical outcomes.

Freedom is one of the main issues of modern philosophy and Kant’s and Hegel’s conceptions of freedom form a major source for comprehending it. However, not only are both Kant’s and Hegel’ conceptions discussed controversially, in the philosophical debate it also remains highly contested which of them offers a more thorough account of freedom.
In this volume, Werner Flach presents Kant’s conception of freedom as well as its potential for understanding basic features of humanity. Christian Krijnen presents Hegel’s conception of freedom and shows that Kant’s conception neglects an essential feature that concerns the actualization of freedom. In their contributions to the discussion, Martin Bunte, Jakub Kloc-Konkołowicz, Hernán Pringe, Jacco Verburgt, Kenneth R. Westphal, and Manfred Wetzel assess the results.
Hegels Wissenschaft der Logik als Paradigma moderner Subjektivität
Volume Editors:

The Science of Logic can undoubtedly be considered Hegel's major work of epoch-making significance. The contributions of this volume make it clear that it is a modern logic which, against the fairy tale of the so-called 'post-metaphysical' age, offers a new metaphysics which sublates the former metaphysics and thus represents a revolutionary break in the history of philosophy. It is demonstrated that Hegel's logic provides a coherently unfolding system of the determinations of pure thought and, with the understanding of the concept as free, the paradigm of modern subjectivity - in clear contrast to the calculi ossified in formalism and the dead calculating machinery of analytic logics.

Presenting new critical perspectives on J.G. Fichte’s Wissenschaftslehre, this volume of English articles by an international group of scholars addresses the topic of first principles in Fichte’s writings. Especially discussed are the central text of his Jena period, the 1794/95 Grundlage der gesammten Wissenschaftslehre, as well as later versions like the Wissenschaftslehre nova methodo (1796-99) and the presentations of 1804 and 1805. Also included are new studies on the first principles of the particular sub-disciplines of Fichte’s system, such as the doctrines of aesthetics, nature, right, ethics, and history.

On Theology: Herman Bavinck's Academic Orations presents four previously untranslated works by Herman Bavinck (1854-1921). These works offer important insights into Bavinck’s conceptualisation of the discipline of theology, its place in the modern university, and the relation in which theology stands to religion. In the introductory essay, Bruce R. Pass draws attention to the way these speeches shed light on the development of Bavinck’s thought across his tenure at the Kampen Theological School and the Free University of Amsterdam as well as the complex relationship in which Bavinck’s thought stands to that of Friedrich Schleiermacher.

Metabolic form inverts itself into content. Highlighting Hegel's conceptual realism, Hoffmann focuses on an undervalued move in his dialectic: inversion (μεταβολή). From precursors in Kant the author validates the philosopher's claim in not supplying a completeness proof for his table of categories: it's easy! Hoffmann shows how his new approach works on Hegel's central terms–paradigmatically language and individuality–in detailed analytical work through the two great masterpieces: Phenomenology and Objective Logic. From consciousness inversion at the start of the former to the modalities and subjectivity of substance at the end of the latter, Hoffmann develops Hegel's epochal conceptual realism and metabolic dialectic as keys to substantiating the philosopher's claim for his Logic: it is indeed the science of absolute form!

Once again, for the first time, Marx and Durkheim join forces while exploring the moral economy of neoliberalism. Resignation and Ecstasy provides a fresh perspective on the immortal vortex of sacred energies pulsating beneath the peculiar logic of modern accumulation. Relying on dialectical methods, classical sociology and psychoanalysis are reconstituted within an Hegelian social ontology to differentiate the ephemeral from the eternal aspects of social life.

In The Idealism of Freedom, Klaus Vieweg argues for a Hegelian turn in philosophy. Hegel’s idealism of freedom contains a number of epoch-making ideas that articulate a new understanding of freedom, which still shape contemporary philosophy. Hegel establishes a modern logic, as well as the idea of a social state. With his distinction between civil society and the state he makes an innovative contribution to political philosophy. Hegel defends the idea of freedom for all in a modern society and is a sharp critic of every nationalism and racism. Vieweg’s study introduces these ideas into perspectives on freedom in contemporary philosophy.
Hegel’s Concept of Ethical Life Today
Volume Editors:
An Ethical Modernity? investigates the relation between Hegel’s doctrine of ethical life (Sittlichkeit) and modernity as a historical category and a philosophical concept. In this collection of essays, the authors analyze Hegel’s theory of ethical life from various perspectives: social ontology, social practices and beliefs, theory of judgment, relations between Hegel’s theory of ethical life and Kant’s ethics, Hegel’s philosophy of family, relation of the modern market to ‘European values’, the ethos of state and of international relations, and Hegel’s metaphilosophical commitment to philosophy. This volume is of importance to anyone interested in how Hegel’s practical philosophy relates to us and our times.
