With this edition, access to the texts of the famous Traité de Zoologie is now available to a worldwide readership. Parts 1, 2, and 3A of volume VII, i.e., the Crustacea, were published in French in, respectively, 1994, 1996, and 1999. Brill recognized the importance of these books and arranged for a translation to be made. However, some of the manuscripts dated from the early 1980s and it was clear from the beginning that in many fields of biology a mere translation of the existing text would not suffice. Thus, all chapters have been carefully reviewed, either by the original authors or by newly attracted specialists, and adequate updates have been prepared accordingly.

This second volume of The Crustacea, revised and updated from the Traité de Zoologie contains chapters on:
-The circulatory system
-The digestive tract: anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry
-Osmoregulation: morphological, physiological, biochemical, hormonal, and developmental aspects
-The endocrine organs
-The ontogeny of sex and sexual physiology
-The origins of crustacean larvae

The volume concludes with a list of contributors, as well as with both taxonomic and subject indices.

van Steenis

The mountain flora of Java constitutes a unique natural heritage of Indonesia and indeed of the whole world. The most informative and most beautifully illustrated book ever written on this rich resource is doubtlessly The Mountain Flora of Java written by the late renowned Dutch biologist C.G.G.J. van Steenis, with unsurpassed paint drawings of 456 flowering plant species by Amir Hamzah and Moehamad Toha. The first edition from 1972 was sold out fairly soon. Brill is therefore proud to publish this edition of this seminal work at this point in time.

There are three very good reasons to reprint the Mountain Flora both in English and in the Indonesian language.
• First of all there is the importance of this flora for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of the vulnerable mountain ecosystems of Java.
• Secondly, the unique style and quality of the 456 plant portraits by Amir Hamzah and Moehamad Toha.
• Thirdly there is the science, explaining and interpreting the rich botanical diversity in the mountains of Java.

Although written over 40 years ago Van Steenis’ approach to the study of botany can still serve as an example and inspiration for young botanists, conservationists and policy makers.

Piet Kaas, Richard Van Belle and Herman Strack

Since H.A. Pilsbry’s classic work on the chitons (Polyplacophora), published between 1892 and 1894 in the Manual of Conchology, there has been no comprehensive taxonomic review of this group.
Piet Kaas and Richard van Belle changed this when they started the book series Monograph of Living Chitons, which aimed, after a careful study of the type material, to systematically describe and illustrate every known - or hitherto unknown - species. The first five volumes were published between 1985 and 1994. The sudden death of seniour author Piet Kaas in 1996 postponed the publication of Volume 6. The unfinished manuscript was taken up by a new author, Hermann Strack, who in collaboration with van Belle managed to finish it.
In Volume 6 no less than 167 species are treated and depicted, of which 3 are described as new. Two important families are covered: the Schizochitonidae and the Chitonidae. Especially the coverage of the Chitonidae, with well know and species-rich genera and subgenera as Chiton, Rhyssoplax, Acanthopleura, Tonicia, Lucilina and Onithochiton is long awaited and will prove very useful to researchers, students and collectors alike.

Life and work of Dr. Johannes Govertus de Man (1850-1930)

A Crustacea and Nematoda specialist

This book describes the life and work of Dr. Johannes Govertus de Man (1850-1930), a remarkable Dutch invertebrate zoologist. J.G. de Man worked on the systematics of both the Crustacea, in particular on Decapoda (i.e. crabs, crayfish, lobsters, and shrimps), and the microscopic Nematoda or roundworms.
The biographic part describes his years of childhood and youth, student days and the time he was working at the National Museum of Natural History, Leiden, the Netherlands and the period after he resigned at the museum. In appendices, his publications, described Crustacea, Nematoda and other taxa, species named after De Man and the De Man archive are presented. A selection of his drawings and a CD-ROM with his 1884 Nematoda monograph are included.

Age Rage and Going Gently

Stories of the Senescent Subject in Twentieth-Century French Writing

This wide-ranging study looks at how the ageing process has alternately been figured in and excluded from twentieth-century French literature, philosophy and psychoanalysis. It espouses a critical interdisciplinarity and calls into question the assumptions underlying much research into ageing in the social sciences, work in which the negative aspects of growing older are almost invariably suppressed. It offers a major reappraisal of Simone de Beauvoir’s great but neglected late treatise, La Vieillesse, and presents the first substantial discussion of a lost documentary film about old age in which Beauvoir appears and which she helped to write, PROMENADE AU PAYS DE LA VIEILLESSE. Questioning Beauvoir’s own rather reductive reading of Gide’s work on old age, this study analyses the way in which his Journal and Ainsi soit-il experiment with a range of representational models for the senescent subject. The encounter between psychoanalysis and ageing is framed by a reading of Violette Leduc’s autobiographical trilogy, in which she suggests that psychoanalysis, to its detriment, simply cannot allow ageing to signify. This claim is tested in a critical survey of recent theoretical and clinical work by psychoanalysts interested in ageing in France, the UK and the US. Lastly, Hervé Guibert’s recently republished photo-novel about his elderly great-aunts, Suzanne et Louise, is examined as a work of intergenerational empathy and is found, in addition, to be an important statement of his photographic aesthetic. Navigating between the extremes of fury (‘age rage’) and serene acceptance (‘going gently’), this study aims throughout to examine the role which ageing plays in formal, as well as thematic, terms in writing the life of the subject.

In the papers collected in this, the first volume of the Spatial Practices series, Englishness is reflected in the spaces it occupies or dwells in. Broadly influenced by a renewed and growing interest in questions of cultural identity, its emergence in Victorian theories and fictions of nationality, and the new cultural geography, the papers cover a rich variety of spaces and places which have been appropriated for cultural meanings: the rural countryside and farmland of the Home Counties in the early nineteenth century as Arcadian idyll in Cobbett, as the land to die for in war propaganda, and as nostalgia for a unified, organic English culture in Lawrence, Morton and Priestley’s travel writing, but also in the Shell Tourist Guides to motoring in rural England; English moorland; the sacred geographies of monuments in Hardy and others; the traditional seaside deconstructed in Martin Parr’s photography, and the sea as English Victorian imperial territory and its symbolic breezes in Froude’s travel writing. The English landscape is also a paradigm for the description of other places in D. H. Lawrence’s travel writing or for the colonial territory itself in Rushdie’s writing India, a displacement of other landscapes. This collection of papers examines the assumption that constructions of rural England provide the basis for an understanding of Englishness.

This entirely new English edition, comprehensively revised and edited by T.L. Blockeel, has been translated from German, with some additional text, by the authors.
In the past ten years there have been many advances in our knowledge of the taxonomy and distribution of European bryophytes and pteridophytes, all of which have been taken into account in this, the first English translation of Die Moos- und Farnpflanzen Europas, published in its sixth edition in 1995 as Volume 4 of the highly regarded Kleine Kryptogamenflora.
The structure of the book takes the form of an extended key to just under 2000 European species in which families and genera are keyed out mostly as single units. The format is that of a field guide. The systematic arrangement of the book largely follows the structure of the keys inherited from the previous edition, and the sequence of the text, with few exceptions, follows that of the excellent published figures. Consequently, it has been considered unwise to introduce too many systematic innovations, particularly as many systematic and phylogenetic questions remain to be answered At the same time, every effort has been made to ensusre comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of the species occurring in Europe.
Despite certain inherent difficulties, the opportunity has been taken by the editor to modify sections of the text, correct errors and iron out ambiguities and inconsistencies. As in the last German edition, some rare and newly added species are not keyed out independently but are treated briefly by means of a clearly indicated annotation in the body of the key.
The book is unique in its coverage of all bryophyes and ferns to found within this large and varied geographical area, its scope extending from Iceland in the west to the Ural Mountains in the east and including the northern Macaronesian islands.The fern section has been further extended to include Georgia and the Caucasus, Turkey and Cyprus and the Cape Verde Islands. The distribution reflects current national boundaries.
Although the bryophyte and fern sections of the book vary slightly in their presentation, reflecting their separate authorship, every effort has been made to standardize them where practicable. The literature references, combining those to bryophytes and ferns, have also been brought right up to date, and the Glossary contains many additional entries. Publications dealing with rare and threatened species are highlighted.
In a single volume, this work provides users with the means of making at least a preliminary identification of any bryophyte or fern which they might encounter in Europe or Macaronesia.

Picturing Mind

Paradox, Indeterminacy and Consciousness in Art & Poetry

In this book the author takes an unusual multi-disciplinary approach to debates about contemporary art and poetry, ideas about the mind and its representations, and theories of knowledge and being. Arts practices are considered as enactments of mind and as transformative modes of consciousness.
